Truck driver seen gambling confesses phony armed robbery story to Carson City authorities
A truck driver who was seen gambling on Monday at a Carson City supermarket, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of falsely reporting a crime after he told police he was robbed of $1,300 at gunpoint by two black men.
The Phoenix, Ariz., man was arrested early this morning. His bail was set at $632. According to a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy arrest report, officers were dispatched Monday night to the 3000 block of North Carson street for a reported armed robbery at JM Furniture.
As deputies arrived they met with the 38-year-old suspect who advised that he had been robbed at gunpoint. The man said he was employed by a Texas-based trucking company and arrived in Carson City on Monday. He said his delivery location was at the furniture store but that the business was closed at the time of arrival so he was going to sleep in his truck in the parking lot.
The man told deputies that at around 9:15 p.m. he needed to use the restroom so he walked to Burger King at the 3500 block of North Carson. After five minutes in the restroom he said he began to walk back to his truck at the furniture store. He advised that during his walk a gold-colored four-door Honda Accord with unknown California license plates pulled off Highway 395 and stopped in front of him. He advised that a 20-year-old black man got out of the front passenger seat of the car and said said "hey" according to the arrest report.
The suspect said that the supposed Honda Accord passenger pulled out an unknown type of handgun and pointed it at him, and instructed him to walk in front of their vehicle and to get down on his knees. In telling his story the suspect said he complied. He said that the driver of the Honda held the gun to his head while the passenger suspect began to search through his pockets. The suspect told officers that he had $1,300 cash in his left front cargo shorts pocket. He said the supposed Honda Accord passenger and driver took the money and drove away.
The man advised the suspects then drove north on Carson Street and then made a U-turn at the intersection of Carson Street and College Parkway. The suspect said the supposed Honda Accord driver then drove south on Carson Street and that's when he called police.
The suspect described the driver with a gun and his accomplice to authorities. The suspect then advised the only places he had gone to in Carson City was Starbucks in the 3400 block of North Carson, Burger King and JM Furniture.
According to the arrest report, an officer took a photo of the man with his digital camera and gave it to another deputy who went to Burger King to confirm that the man had visited the restaurant. Employees said they didn't remember the suspect.
The deputy then went to SaveMart in the 3600 block of North Carson. Employees told the deputy that they had seen the suspect at the store gambling, arriving at 7:30 p.m. and leaving at an unknown time. The suspect then completed a statement and the officer searched the area for evidence, which none was located, according to the arrest report.
Several deputies from the graveyard and swing shift searched the area for the suspects. Sheriff Ken Furlong and Captain Clay Wall also responded to assist with the investigation and search, according to the arrest report.
Authorities then transported the suspect to the Carson Detective Division for an interview. At midnight, authorities were informed by the detective that during his interview, the man admitted to making up the entire story. The arresting deputy then spoke with the man who was in the interview room with detectives.
The man told officers that he lost the money somewhere in Placerville and made the story up about being robbed. The man apologized and admitted this was the second time he lost the money and reported himself as a victim of robbery. The man advised he did not want to tell his employer he lost his money so he called the police to make a report.
The man was arrested on a charge of filing a false report and was taken to jail.
