Historical coin press to mint special medallion honoring Abe Curry in Carson City
Historical Coin Press No. 1 inside the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, will be minting a special medallion commemorating Abraham Curry, the first superintendent of the Carson City Mint.
The 30 mm, .999 fine silver medallion is a limited series of 2,000 pieces. The Carson City Mint, in operation from 1870 to 1893, is now incorporated into the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, building.
The minting will be held Saturday, August 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, 600 N. Carson St., Carson City.
The Carson City Mint is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and Abraham Curry played an important role in the Mint’s early years. Instrumental in convincing Congress to locate a mint in Carson City, Curry also was involved in the construction of the facility and then served as the Carson City Mint’s first superintendent.
During its years of operation, the Carson City Mint produced roughly $50 million (face value) in gold and silver coins. Today, coins with the CC mint mark are prized by collectors.
Museum patrons are asked to maintain at least 6 feet of distance from other visitors. Patrons are required to wear masks. Debit or credit card payment only for admissions and for store sales. Groups larger than 10 are not allowed unless pre-arranged. A family group up to 10 persons is allowed, and the group must stay together. Museums are ADA accessible.
