Hot August Nights Kickoff Rally cruises to downtown Virginia City
Hundreds of attendees and classic cars packed downtown Virginia City during the Hot August Nights Kickoff Rally on Saturday.
The first Hot August Nights began on Aug. 1, 1986 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, and Virginia City brought a sense of nostalgia back to the historic mining town.
Cars, trucks and cruisers from all years and models filled 86 S. C Street during the Classic Car Show-N-Shine. Participants walked back-and-forth to view an angle of each vintage automobile.
In her first year at the rally, Taylor James showcased her 1978 Chevrolet Camaro z28. The classic muscle car has experienced some wear and tear over the years, but James made sure to keep its classic look.
“I’ve had it for quite some time,” she said. “I’ve raised two boys in it and it was a daily driver for its entire life. … I’ve put almost 20 thousand dollars in it to keep its charm, but it’s been worth every penny for me.”
While the vehicles soaked up most of the spotlight and hot summer sun, participant Dennis Wallace savored every moment.
“My family and I have been coming for years now,” Wallace said. “You just don’t know what will show up (here) and every year I’m left amazed.”
Virginia City’s Hot August Nights Kickoff runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Live entertainment from DJ Steve and Rich West and The Route 66 Band takes the stage on Friday with all-day music from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lady and the Tramps perform on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.
