Lisa Schuette speaks on her win of Carson City Board of Supervisors seat for Ward 4
Carson City native Lisa Schuette was elected to the Carson City Board of Supervisors for Ward 4 in the recent primary election, and she took the time to speak about her vision for Carson City and what she hopes to achieve as a Supervisor.
Schuette is currently studying up on her position as a supervisor and is reaching out to department heads to better acquaint herself with the city's processes.
"I am thrilled and grateful for this opportunity," said Schuette. "Honestly, there is so much to learn that my first focus is taking place right now. I've spoken with several department heads to learn more about what each department does, and I will continue to reach out. Reading and studying the City's Strategic and Master Plans has been very informative as has listening in on the different committee and board meetings that I've been watching on webcam.
In other words, I'm doing my homework and there's a lot of it!"
Schuette grew up in Carson City and has dedicated her life to being of service to the community, from working in law enforcement, to teaching at Carson Middle School, to being the founder of Carson Animal Services Initiative (CASI). Now she'll be taking that dedication a step further as a supervisor.
"As someone who grew up in Carson, I understand why people love this community," said Schuette. "My goal is to promote collaboration, innovation, and build on the sense of community."
One of the focuses Schuette would like to promote is getting more residents involved in public meetings.
"Regarding city government and projects, I think we as a city can always do a better job getting the word out about public meetings so more people are aware of the opportunities they have to provide input, as well as learn about the projects being discussed," said Schuette.
Schuette's vision for the future of Carson City involves natural resource management, public safety, a healthy economy, and more.
"My vision for the future of Carson City? Protect and promote our beautiful area by properly managing our natural resources, and working to find the balance between people wanting to visit and/or live here with sustainable job creation, a healthy economy, balanced growth, necessary infrastructure, and public safety," said Schuette.
From her experience promoting the building of the new animal shelter, Schuette learned a few lessons about community involvement.
"What I learned while working to get the new animal shelter built is that when people have the opportunity to be heard, they tend to be more willing to also listen and from there a better understanding of the why's behind a project can take shape," said Schuette. "While this is an oversimplification, I've seen firsthand how dialogue can play a positive role in project planning, not only for community members but for city personnel. Ultimately, Carson City is home to all of us, so we have a shared interest in taking care of our community."
The second Board of Supervisors seat of Ward 2 resulted in a non-majority, and will go to the regular election in November. The two hopefuls are Maurice "Mo" White and Stacie Wilke-McCulloch.
Current Board of Supervisors member Lori Bagwell was also elected as Carson City's new mayor during the primaries, and her seat will be up for appointment when she becomes Mayor. The Board of Supervisors will appoint her replacement at that time.
