2019 Ironhorse Rail Camp brings training, in-depth courses on trains and railroads in Carson City
The 2019 Ironhorse Rail Camp’s four-day course on train safety and railroad operations is quite the ride at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City.
From June 13-16, course attendees explore the basic tasks and operations such as railroad and train safety, specific positions on the train crew and the various railroad equipment used during the 20th century.
After the classroom activities, participants gain hands-on experience of preparing and operating the No. 22 McKeen Motor Car, the Virginia & Truckee 4-6-0 No. 25 steam locomotive and the Tucson, Cornelia & Gila Bend No. 41 Edwards Motor Car.
“This is such a great event,” volunteer Mark Reece said. “This is such an in-depth course over these four days. We give them supervised hands-on experience and even let them drive the self-propelled cars.”
The Ironhorse Rail Camp tuition fee is $1,195. Included in the tuition is a one-year membership to the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum, gloves, one engineer’s cap and all materials and handouts. Coffee, rolls, donuts and lunch were served throughout the day.
The camp is limited to ten participants to ensure adequate time is facilitated to each member.
The Nevada State Railroad Museum is located at 2180 S. Carson Street. For more information on the Ironhorse Rail Camp, visit the link here.
