Carson City's prescription drug roundup takes in 551 pounds of pills and needles
The first of two Partnership Carson City prescription drug roundups of 2019 was a public safety success. Saturday’s community event netted 414 pounds of pills and 137 pounds of needles.
Partnership Carson City urges those with expired or unused medications to bring them to the next drug round-up in October. Prescription drugs can also be disposed at the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
Tossing prescription drugs in the garbage is too risky, said Hannah McDonald, Partnership's executive director.
“It’s sad but true, if someone is searching for medications, they might find them in your trash,” she said. “We have to do everything we can to make sure they can’t be reused.”
Flushing them down the toilet is not a viable option. “There are certain substances that are difficult or even impossible to remove from our water system,” McDonald said. “Putting medication down the drain makes it much more costly to provide our community with safe and clean drinking water.”
For those who missed Saturday's event and want to dispose of their prescription drugs, they can be dropped off for disposal at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, 911 E. Musser St. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
