BLM to Transfer Public Lands to Carson City by end of May
A patent and deed for transfer of public lands from the Bureau of Land Management to Carson City should be finalized by the end of May 2015.
Approximately 5,400 acres will be included in the transfer and are located throughout Carson City. The lands include the Prison Hill Recreation Area, Silver Saddle Ranch, parcels in the Goni Canyon area, parcels near Carson City's Sanitary Landfill, and others.
"We have a great relationship with Carson City and look forward to being a supportive partner as they work to implement their Master Plan in the area," said Leon Thomas, Sierra Front Field Manager.
Prison Hill Recreation Area, Silver Saddle Ranch, and the Ambrose Carson River Natural Area have a conservation easement which limits development and certain uses, thereby protecting the cultural resources and open space values in perpetuity.
“Carson City and the BLM have worked diligently over the past several years to achieve this land transfer and we are pleased it’s become reality. We look forward to celebrating with the community,” said Ann Bollinger, Carson City Open Space Administrator.
The north end of Prison Hill is currently closed to motorized use and will remain closed after the transfer. Illegal use continues to occur in the area. Carsonite markers have been placed at the site notifying the public that the area is closed. Boulders have also been placed in this area to close the major motor access routes. The City plans to keep the area non-motorized and clearly mark a parking area for non-motorized users.
