CHS Baseball: Senators' offense explodes; crushes Hug 16-1
After a three game roundabout in California and going 1-2 in the process, the Carson High School Senators returned home to Ron McNutt Field Tuesday in Carson City looking to rebound against the Hug Hawks of Reno.
Carson seized control of the game in the first inning, as starting pitcher Bryce Moyle struck out the side, giving the Senator offense a green light to make an impact.
On the other end of the spectrum, Hug starting pitcher Xavier Wright had no answer for the Carson offense. With runners on 1st and 2nd, shortstop Jace Keema wacked an RBI single giving Carson a 1-0 lead.
First basemen Colby Zemp tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded ending the inning with a 2-0 lead. Moyle once again continued his dominance on the mound, striking out the next three Hug hitters.
"I just had my stuff working tonight, and I felt in the zone and confident," said Moyle on his pitching display.
As Moyle kept the Hawks' bats silent, the Senator offense continued to flourish in the second inning as they capitalized on a 5-run, 4-hit inning masterpeice highlighted with RBI's by: Kahle Goode, Abel Carter, Jared Barnard, and Trevor Edis making the score 7-0 in CHS' favor to conclude the 2nd inning.
Once again, Moyle struck out the next 3 Hawks at bat with an array of pitches that painted the strike zone. Substitutions were put in place for the Senators, but the offense continued to thrive. As Zemp stuffed the stat sheet with a 2 RBI double that put Carson in scoring position.
Kyle Glanzman also added a 2 RBI single capping off a 5-run 3rd inning for the Senator offense 12-0. A wild pitch by Zemp, who came in for relief in the 4th inning for Moyle, gave Hug their only run of the ball game as the Senators put the game away with a 4-run inning in the 4th highlighted by a Moyle home run, and an RBI each for Glanzman and Teigan Key.
Minutes later, Brandon Gagnon's RBI put the mercy rule into effect ending the game during the 4th inning as Carson ran away with the lead 16-1. After a few shaky losses, a win this big could give the team an extra boost headed into the next game.
Kellen McDermott gave his thoughts after the game on their impressive victory.
"For me, this is just another win. As a team we can't focus too much on a certain game win or lose and we have to focus on the next one," McDermott said. "But we know the certain adjustments we need to make to get another win like sitting back on the ball and having a wide strike zone. So we need to take those adjustments into next game."
For Carson, the offense exploded at just the right time. Colby Zemp went 1 for 2 with a double and 3 RBI's.
Jared Barnard and Kyle Glanzman each had 2 RBI's apeice. Kahle Goode, Abel Carter, Jace Keema, Trevor Edis, Teigan Key, and Brandon Gagnon all had 1 RBI each.
Bryce Moyle continued his phenominal season on the mound, as he struck out every batter he faced in 3 innings with 9 strikeouts while adding a solo Home Run. The Senators will look to carry momentum into next game at Hug High School April 6, 3:45 p.m.
