Let's help each other get through this crisis
This morning we wake up to a new reality in Carson City.
Last night at midnight, by order of Gov. Steve Sisolak, all casinos and gaming machines in Nevada shut down, and with them a large chunk of the state's tax revenue.
Today at noon, all non-essential businesses are supposed to close their doors. A majority of the state's workforce is starting today not knowing if they have a job, if they will be paid, or how they will pay their bills.
There are a lot more questions than answers. We are hoping those answers will come soon as we settle into this new COVID-19 isolation world we now live in.
While we wait for those answers, we will have to do whatever we can to help each other.
Those with the financial means to help should consider making donations to Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, Food for Thought, Salvation Army, and Healthy Communities Coalition Food Pantries to help those families who may be without assistance for who knows how long.
Our local businesses are going to be hit hard by this. Some might not survive even if this shutdown lasts only 30 days, which at this time seems overly optimistic. If you don't want to see these businesses disappear, please consider helping them out.
Many of these businesses will still be able to do online sales. Help them out by buying their products via their websites.
You can also help local businesses by purchasing gift certificates. This can give these businesses an infusion of cash when they really need it. Buy several gift certificates if you can and give them out as Christmas presents.
The COVID-19 pandemic is proving to be especially tough for the bars and restaurants in our area. These businesses depend on people coming into their establishments to spend money, which can't happen right now.
Under the shutdown order, restaurants are able to still do curbside pick up and delivery. So please, if you can, order up some food from your favorite eateries.
We will bring you more information on how to help each other to survive as we all try to figure out this new reality.
