Carson City weather: Gusty winds ahead of storm expected to arrive late Saturday
Enjoy this last day of mild weather before a moderate winter storm moves into the Carson City and Sierra regions late Saturday into Sunday. This storm will bring gusty winds, prompting a Wind Advisory from the National Weather Service, rain and heavy snow.
The Wind Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Winds will be from the southwest 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph. Wind prone areas such as the foothills of Reno and Carson City may see gusts to 70 mph, according to the weather service.
Heavy snow is likely for the Sierra, and snow accumulation for western Nevada is still possible by Sunday morning. Snow showers will continue on and off during the rest of Sunday.
Since the heaviest snows will likely fall at night, Saturday into Sunday, motorists can expect snow covered roadways and travel disruptions including on Interstate 80 and Highway 395. Conditions will deteriorate rapidly once the snow
begins.
Forecast confidence is high in seeing snow accumulations across western Nevada from this storm. However confidence is lower in exact snowfall amounts, which could range from just an inch or so to upwards of 3 to 6 inches.
The weather service recommends travel plans by midday or sundown Saturday or waiting until Sunday evening.
