Carson City weather: Rain through Saturday with largest system to arrive late Sunday
Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. A series of storms will continue to push through the Carson City and Sierra on Friday, with a brief break Saturday and then the arrival of significant precipitation beginning late Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
Friday will bring another round of mountain snow and valley rain. Around Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, light precipitation is likely to spread across much of the region, with a short period of moderate rain showers possible south of US-50 during the day Friday.
Areas of light rain may continue in lower elevations, with better chances shifting to north of I-80 by Friday night. Snow amounts for the Sierra could range from 6 inches to a foot, according to the weather service.
There will be a break Saturday afternoon with possible showers Saturday night through Sunday before a much stronger storm arrives late Sunday night and lasts into Tuesday. The system for early next week will bring significant precipitation amounts. Snow levels remain uncertain and but it is anticipated that the amounts will greatly affect the potential for runoff and flooding, especially for northeast California and the northern Sierra, according to the weather service.
With very wet antecedent conditions in lower elevations and exceptionally deep snowpack at higher elevations, even small amounts of precipitation could create renewed flooding concerns.
The main flooding concerns will continue to be along smaller streams, areas of poor drainage, and main stem rivers in northeast California such as the Pit, Susan and Middle Fork Feather, which have already seen flooding this past week.
The weather service recommends people should take advantage of the quieter periods to clear snow, mud and debris from storm drains and poor drainage areas, and to keep flood mitigation measures in place through next week.
