Carson City area weather: High winds may bring more dust, poor air quality to region
Breezy northeast and east winds may result in another round of blowing dust Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Dust kicked up from nearby dry lake beds may produce localized areas of visibility reduced below 4 miles, including portions of Reno and Carson City.
Motorists should be aware of the potential for rapid changes in visibility while driving. Windy conditions Saturday and overnight into early Sunday morning stirred up enough dust to cause reduction in air quality for Washoe and Mono counties.
As of 10 a.m. Sunday morning air quality around Carson City, Carson Valley and Reno was in the "Good" category. That could change once the winds kick up again. You can find the latest air quality information on airnow.gov.
Around Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County, the weather service says we can expect breezy conditions Sunday, with gusts as high as 45 mph and areas of blowing dust. The daytime high temperature will be around 40 but will seem colder due to the wind. Monday will warm up some with a high in the mid to upper 40s.
Meanwhile, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday through 4 a.m. Monday for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Alpine and Mono counties.
Northeast winds 15-25 mph with gusts 40-60 mph possible. Gusts of 100-120 mph are likely along the Sierra ridgeline. Due to the unusual direction of these winds, blow down trees, fences, and power lines are possible.
Travel could also be hazardous for high-profile vehicles traveling along US-395 in Mono County as well as for aviation due to anticipated turbulence.
As for precipitation, there's a chance for light accumulations most likely for the Carson Range and Sierra. Snow will likely dissipate late this evening for the Tahoe Basin and Alpine County, but showers may continue in Mono and Inyo counties through early Monday morning.
While the snow accumulations will be light, be aware the roads may be slick the next couple of morning, especially across Sierra passes. Check the road conditions at NVRoads.com before you head out.
