New Carson City group offers support, education to parents with children who have addictions
A new support group is starting in Carson City for family members who have loved ones with addictions. The group will meet Thursday nights, 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Fire Station 51 meeting room, 777 S Stewart St.
The United States is suffering through the worst drug epidemic in its history.
The numbers are heartbreaking: Our federal government is estimating that 6,700 Americans begin to abuse prescription drugs each day, one third of those under the age of 18. That’s 2.4 million new drug abusers each year, nearly 1 percent of the US population, and that’s just prescription drugs. Heroin use has doubled in 5 years. Heroin deaths are up 500 percent over the past 15 years.
Drug overdose deaths now exceed car crashes in annual deaths. As you are aware, the vast majority of those in our prisons are there in connection with drugs or drug related offenses.
PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones) is a support group of parents helping parents. We meet every week to offer education and support for parents or spouses dealing with an addicted family member.
Although PAL has been informally in existence since 2006, we incorporated in Arizona as a non-profit in 2015 in order to help expand PAL nationally. PAL's vision is to make PAL meetings available at no charge to all parents and family members struggling with the addiction of a loved one.
PAL is a faith-based Christian organization and our mission is to provide hope to families through education and support. For more information about our meetings and resources visit our website: palgroup.org or e-mail lisa.kirby@outlook.com
