Nevada District 40 Assemblyman PK O'Neill responds to Carson City Republican Party
The Carson City Republican Party recently asked me to defend and apologize for my actions in the 2015 legislative session.
The lines the CCRP are asking candidates, especially me, to follow blindly are not those of the true Republican party. I believe that it is important that we differentiate the hard working, family rearing, soccer mom and T-ball coaching dad Carson City Republicans from the ideologues who have taken over leadership of the Carson City party. If we concede that they are the “republican party,” we insult everyday republicans and do them a real disservice.
The CCRP stated I “sullied their reputation” by voting for funding to assist our Community Colleges, get State workers back to full time work with full time pay, funding a northern Nevada Veterans Home, providing parental school choice via ESAs and reforming funding for K-12 education with accountability along with numerous other items, and have decided that I must be purged from the Carson City Republican Party.
This act in no way prevents me from running for office and serving as your republican representative in the legislature, it would merely remove me from the “good ol’ boys’ network.
The 2016 primary election, with early voting starting on May 28, is going to be a referendum on whether more republicans than the CCRP leadership in Assembly District 40 want to sit back and watch the world pass us by or whether they want to do the sometimes difficult things that will make Nevada competitive economically and educationally on a national and global scale.
As I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again:
I don’t apologize for believing that it is our moral obligation to take care of those Veterans that served our nation so courageously.
I don’t apologize for providing parents the tools to individualize their students’ educations via ESAs, the best, most inclusive school choice program in the country.
I don’t apologize for believing that the hard working state employees, of which Nevada has the least per capita in the Nation, should be paid their full salaries for full-time work.
I also don't apologize for providing our community colleges with the additional funding necessary to develop and train Nevada’s technical work force to meet the increasing demand for skilled workers.
I don’t cower in the face of a vocal minority. I was elected to do a job and I did it. I’m proud of how we are giving hard working Nevadans and their children opportunities for a lifetime.
The Carson City Republican Party has abandoned what is good for the state, now and in the future, for holding on tightly to some antiquated and rigid ideals that will ensure Nevada has no future as an economic power in the United States.
I urge you to make the courageous and right decision, as I did during the 78th Legislative Session, to vote for PK O’Neill in the primary election. Let’s continue our forward momentum and make our new Nevada the economic and educational power we are capable of being.
It was my honor to represent the people of AD40 during the 2015 legislative session. I stood with the governor, the leader of the Republican Party, on his budget and revenue plan. I look forward to continuing that privilege and to make Nevada the best place to live, raise a family and conduct business.
Thank you.
