Experts Against Common Core

January 13, 2015 - 6:00pm Dr. Sandra Stotsky, Endowed Chair in Teacher Quality at the University of Arkansas’s Department of Education Reform and Chair of the Sadlier Mathematics Advisory Board, along with Dr. James Milgram, Emeritus Professor at Stanford University’s Department of Mathematics, will be speaking about why Common Core is not good for our children or our country, at events in Carson City, Fallon and Reno, on January 13th and 14th.
Dr. Stotsky and Dr. Milgram were members of the “Common Core Validation Committee” created by the partnership of The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and The Council of Chief State School Officers. These two educators are the only two on the committee who are content area specialists, and who have written the nation’s strongest K-12 standards. After their careful review and attempts to improve the standards, Doctors Stotsky and Milgram, along with three others on the committee, would not sign off on the Common Core standards.
Common Core State Standards (CC) is the most sweeping proposed change to education in the United States in the past 70 years (added) with virtually no input from teachers, administrators, parents or taxpayers. While not yet discussed broadly throughout the media, this coming year will be the first year that the Common Core Standards will be fully implemented and tested, by “secret,” high stakes, online tests. Students/families and teachers will be impacted significantly by their implementation, particularly in Nevada.
The speaking schedule for Dr. Stotsky and Dr. Milgram includes a public presentation and discussion at: Carson City Legislative Building (401 S. Carson Street) on Tuesday, January 13th, from 6p-8p; The King Buffett in Reno on Wednesday, January 14th from 11:30a-1:30p, and at the Fallon Convention Center (100 Campus Way), The Nevada Department of Education will be represented at this event. Also on Wednesday, from 6:30p-8:30p. The presentations are open to the public and reservations are not required.
