With this proclamation, the governor has perpetrated the most egregious insult of all Nevadans. He has also perpetrated the most egregious assault on fact, law and common sense.

Today, Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020 is the beginning of a new year, a new decade and also a new set of laws. More than 70 laws enacted by the Nevada Legislature last year take effect either in whole or in part today.

They include several major health care initiatives — including a ban on surprise emergency room bills, a tax on vaping products and a requirement that hospitals use patients’ preferred names and pronouns — as well as laws that will benefit employees, including paid sick leave.

The Wolf Pack community can help the University of Nevada, Reno transform lives by donating blood this Thanksgiving season. The blood drive, brought to campus by the Associated Students of the University of Nevada and Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services), is scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 27. Following a collaborative recruitment between the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Carson Tahoe Health, Lorrel Toft, M.D., F.A.C.C., a cardiovascular critical care physician and researcher, has been recruited as an associate professor for UNR Med’s Department of Internal Medicine as well as a cardiologist on staff with Carson Tahoe Health.

Imagine the experience of children who are removed from their homes due to allegations of abuse or neglect. These children find themselves in a world filled with social workers, lawyers, judges and courtrooms where life-altering decisions are made on their behalf.

On July 25, Joe Tummarello, a long-term client with Carson City-based sober-living facility Lyfe Recovery, passed away at Carson Tahoe Hospital. By all accounts, a month before his death he had been in fine health for a man of 76. He dealt with COPD and needed an oxygen tank to breathe in the high altitude of northern Nevada, but a check-up with his doctors during May of 2019 showed he was nowhere near the brink of death.

However, after being relocated to Carson City from Lyfe Recovery’s Reno facility, Joe’s medication was withheld and he was denied medical intervention after a rapid deterioration of his health, which ultimately, it is alleged, led to his death.
