Each year, as my last article for that year, I present my Annual Don Q Awards for a number of different reasons: Outstanding, good, not so good, bad, serious, funny, dumb, head-scratching, are-you-kidding, etc.
Those annual awards are presented to all kinds of people or places or things for what has occurred throughout the year. It’s an interesting way to end the year, so here are my 2011 winners:

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval does not plan to join other states in petitioning the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to reclassify marijuana so doctors can prescribe it and pharmacies can dispense it for medical treatment.

Nevada ranks last in "opportunity index," that measures factors like education, crime rate and health care to determine how much opportunity people have for economic success. But Carson City does better in than the state average in high school graduation rate, number of doctors and crime rate. In other words, we suck less than Las Vegas. Hooray!

Fliers that were recently distributed around town offering to paint your house numbers on the curb also showed the logos for the Carson City Sheriff and Fire departments, which made it look like the departments endorsed this business, which they don't according to Sheriff Kenny Furlong. The person who put out the fliers also didn't have a solicitor's license.

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a repeal of Health Reform. Additionally, they passed budget cuts of $1.3 billion to existing funding for Community Health Centers (CHC’s).

They escaped salary cuts during the past session due to rules governing their pay.

Violence on Sunday that led to near-tragedy ended today with the arrest of a 17-year-old Carson City boy. The incident is a reminder of how fragile children can be and how early intervention can prevent something like this from happening again.

Carson Kressley, star of the Bravo Channel show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" was in Carson City today filming scenes for his new reality show "Carson Nation."

Kressley bounded up and down the interior of Carson Mall at midday, with cameras in tow, interacting with shoppers and store employees in his high-energy, over-the-top style. He did quickie makeovers on some people, adding make-up, or working on their hair.

The Reno-Gazette Journal, KTVN Channel 2 Reno and even CNN reports Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons was thrown from a horse on Tuesday afternoon north of Pyramid Lake and is hospitalized at Renown Medical Center in Reno. He is said to be resting and was alert when he spoke with staff.

Update 8:40 a.m.: We talked to the governor's office, and they said Gibbons is still at Renown Medical Center, and is listed in stable condition.
Update 1:30 p.m.: According to a press statement released by the governor's staff, Gibbons broke his pelvis in at least two places. He will have surgery today.
His surgeon says this type of injury is very common when someone is thrown from a horse. His doctors say his prognosis is very good and his injuries are non-life threatening and non-life altering.
Update 9:30 p.m.: Gov. Gibbons has undergone surgery and is recuperating in the hospital.  The Governor’s pelvis was broken in several places. The surgery lasted approximately two hours. The doctor who performed the surgery noted he expects the Governor to make a full recovery.

A Carson City man faces felony domestic battery and battery with a deadly weapon charges after he allegedly hit his girlfriend, splitting the top of her head open with an unknown object, possibly a weight, which caused a five-inch gash.

Raymond Eugene Carter, 54, is being held on $35,000 bail. According to a deputy report narrative, officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of California Street on Friday at about 8:30 p.m.

CARSON CITY – Audits of two state mental health programs reviewed today identified a number of serious findings, from physicians working only a few hours a day to questionable and potentially fraudulent bills for services to the mentally ill.

A Clark County District Court jury last Friday ordered Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Baxter Healthcare Services to pay a combined $500 million in punitive damages to a Nevada man who contracted Hepatitis C during an outbreak two years ago.
The jury award was the largest in Nevada history.
In a statement issued shortly after the jury reached its decision, Teva said it planned to contest the verdict.  A spokesman for Baxter later confirmed the company will also most likely appeal.

CARSON CITY – Nevada GOP U.S. Senate candidate and front-runner Sue Lowden said she expects a negative campaign from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid if she wins the crowded Republican primary in June.

I've always liked Dean Heller. We might disagree politically, but my interactions with him have always been friendly. He seems like a truly nice person, the opposite of the what we see in some other Nevada politicians.

But watching him this week at the NNDA breakfast reminded me that Dean's ambition is clearly more important than adherence to truth.

You see, Dean used to come off as a lot more moderate than he does today. As assemblyman and Secretary of State, he championed causes that don't exactly line up with the national GOP's ideology.
