This week's It's Your City is with Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi who explains Nevada Wildfire Awaremess Month and the measures the public can take to prepare homes from wildfire by creating fire adapted communities.

Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month will kickoff with an event this Saturday, May 3, from 10 to 2 p.m. at Mills Park. The event will promote this year’s wildfire awareness message, encouraging residents to better prepare their homes and properties to survive future wildfires.

22nd Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive is Saturday, May 10

Saturday, May 10 is the 22nd Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive. This is the largest one day food drive in the nation and helps local food banks to restock their supplies in preparation for the summer.

All donations collected in Carson City stay here, benefitting FISH, Ron Wood Resource Center and the Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

Carson City Sheriff's Office to step up trail patrol in Prison Hill recreation area

After years of relative non-enforcement and mounting concerns of vandalism, trash dumping and illegal off road riding on public land designated as open space and not for motorized use, the Carson City Sheriff's Office will step up patrol of the Prison Hill Recreation Area south to Fifth Street.

I am always amused by those individuals who attach themselves to the United States Constitution in such a way as to be literal in its interpretation, wrap themselves in the Flag of our Nation, and call themselves “true patriots” and the defenders of our “rights and liberties”.

Apparently, if I disagree with their definition of “true patriotism” then I am something less than a citizen or patriot incapable of defending our “rights and liberties”.

Dozens of teams, hundreds of players in Carson City for AYSO boys soccer tourney

Dozens of boys soccer teams from Nevada, California and Idaho are in Carson City this weekend for the second round of the 21st annual AYSO Comstock Shootout Soccer Tournament.

Hosted by the Carson City American Youth Soccer Organization Region #140 and Carson Futbol Club, the weekend tournament at Edmonds Sports Complex brings hundreds of players from three states to compete in a series of shootout competitions. It is recognized as one of the largest competitions of its kind in region, said tournament director Molly Walt.

WNC Softball: Snow overcomes Wildcats, 9-6; Gonzalez, McCarthy fuel Western Nevada offense

For the second straight game, Western Nevada College scored four times in the first inning, but the early offense wasn’t enough.

Snow scored seven runs in the third inning to rally for a 9-6 Scenic West Athletic Conference softball victory on Saturday in Ephraim, Utah.

Carson City high school students win big at National History Day regional competition

Ten Carson High School sophomores took home first place awards Saturday at the regional competition for National History Day at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Of the 15 entries from Nicole Fagundes’ Honors World History class, 12 received honors, including six first place entries that advance to the national competition at the University of Maryland at College Park in June.

Veterans From Honor Flight Nevada, Visit Naval Academy
