Events and Happenings in Carson City for Saturday, Sept. 14

Good morning Carson City and happy Saturday! It’s going to get hot again today with a high of 93, but don’t worry, as we get out further into the week the weather will turn more autumnal with highs in the 70s. It could be the last hot day for a while, at least until a freak 90s+ hot day in November followed by a week long blizzard, so enjoy it while it’s here!

Today on the docket we have the farmers market, a Celtic fair at Dangberg Ranch, craft shows, and more! Check below to see the events throughout the weekend:

Saturday, September 14

— Muscle Powered Saturday morning hike at Tahoe East Shore Trail. 8 a.m. at the Highway 50 Park and Ride. Time: Meet at Hwy 50 Park and Ride, just west of the intersection of Hwy 395 S and Hwy 50 W, at 8:00am. We'll carpool to Incline Village to walk on the recently-opened multi-use pathway: Tahoe East Shore Trail.

— Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. We are excited to see you all again this year.

— Andy's ride for suicide awareness. 8:30 a.m. at the Genoa Firehouse on Foothill Rd. in Genoa. ANDY'S RIDE is a suicide awareness ride for our friend and local dentist Andy Getas. Andy began his practice in Carson Valley in 1983, later moving to Carson City. Devoted to his family and his patients, he was an accomplished drummer, loved jazz and cycling. Andy lost his life in 2015. This event will be held Saturday, September 14, 2019 at the Genoa Firehouse on Foothill Road in Genoa.

— Silver State Art Festival coming to Carson City's Fuji Park. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 701 Old Clear Creek Rd. The 2019 Silver State Art Festival is the third annual gathering in Carson City of award-winning gourd artists, painters, photographers, wood, glass and metal artists and from all over the Southwest. The festival runs Sept. 13-15 at Fuji Exhibit Hall, Park & Pavilion in Carson City. Join us on Friday evening for a glass of wine and early holiday shopping. All of the artists will be on hand to chat with and you can learn about their inspiration and techniques.

— Suicide prevention and awareness walks in Carson City, Silver Springs. One walk will take place at Bob McFadden Plaza in Carson City at 9 a.m. Another walk takes place at Silver Stage Middle School in Silver Springs at 10 a.m. The 13th Annual “Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope” community suicide prevention awareness walk will take place this Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019, in 10 different communities across the State of Nevada, including Carson City and Silver Springs. The annual event is hosted by the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention. In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month in September, the walks are designed to help educate the community about the resources available for people suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts, as well as give support for their families. Walk participants are asked to donate $20 per individual.

— Women's retreat with Jana Flaig. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Oasis Community Church, 1520 S. Main Street in Fallon. Annual Women’s Retreat at Oasis Community Church, 1520 South Maine Street, Fallon, NV, 9am-3pm. 775 423-2300. Women (18+) throughout Churchill County will come together for laughter, fun, food and fellowship. The retreat includes a continental breakfast, lunch, crafts, music and a special guest speaker. Author, Speaker, Inspirational Humorist Jana Flaig brings encouragement wrapped in humor, and provides practical tips to knock out fear that discourages us and robs us of hope. Jana shares “Pearls of Wisdom” every woman should know and she doesn’t need anymore.

— Dangberg Home Ranch Celtic Fair coming to Carson Valley. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Dangberg Home Ranch. On Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. the Dangberg Home Ranch Celtic Faire will be the final special event of the 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival. A celebration of the Irish, Scottish and Welsh people who helped to settle Carson Valley will offer a day filled with entertainment and activities for all ages. The gate opens at 9 a.m. with the faire beginning at 10 a.m. From opening until noon, the Silver State Highlanders will be demonstrating heavy athletics such as “tossing the caber” and “weight for distance”.

— Imagination Children's September Art Class. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at St. Mary’s Art Center, 55 North R Street. This one may get a little messy, but it will be a lot of fun. Kids will have a great time learning the various techniques used with chalk and oil pastels from St. Mary’s Art Center’s amazing instructor.

— Plein-Aire Outdoor Painting Workshop. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the River Fork Preserve in Minden. Spend the day outside and create some nature-inspired art on September 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your own supplies (all media welcome). The $25 registration fee includes guided instruction and supply rental, and 50% of the proceeds will go to TNC.

— Salvation Army fundraiser car show. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Salvation Army Office, 911 E. 2nd Street. Thursday Night Cruise Car Show, benefiting the Salvation Army, will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019 at the Salvation Army offices, 911 E. Second Street between Harbin and Pratt avenues, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Pre-registration cost is $20 a day of registration costs $25.

— Family fun Saturday: Scientific illustration. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson Street. Explore the way illustrators help scientists document and share their findings. Make your own scientific illustration journal to take home. Practice illustrating natural history specimens. Reservations not required. Everyone is welcome.

— Home and Garden Craft Show. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 205 E. John Street.
Home and Garden Craft Show, Saturday September 14 from 10am to 4pm, sponsored by Touched By Angels, 205 E John Street, Carson City. Come and help us celebrating our 8th year. — Train to Virginia City from Carson City. Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Prices for the ride range from $25-$55. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mill on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more.

— Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

— Sixth annual Humanities Literary Crawl. 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. “Unabridged,” the sixth annual Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl, will take place Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Reno, featuring an exploratory day of over 40 fiction, non-fiction, and poetry readings, as well as panel discussions, book signings, and workshops. The adventure begins for families at 11 a.m. with an iSpy family reading and scavenger hunt at the Downtown Reno Library. Kiese Laymon, author of Heavy: An American Memoir, will kick off the Literary Crawl with the keynote address at noon at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno (160 W Liberty Street). An afternoon of Literary Crawl events follows the keynote, taking place at venues throughout the California Avenue corridor in Reno. Access to all events and venues is free and open to the public, and all ages are welcome to participate at a variety of family-friendly readings and activities.

— Coin Press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 years ago in the very same building. The venerable press which churned out millions of dollars in silver and gold coins during stints at U.S. Mints in Carson City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver between 1870 and 1964. The press demonstrations will take place the last Friday of the month with two-person teams of volunteers not only working the press but sharing its history with museum visitors.

— Harmony on the Comstock Music Festival. The outdoor venue takes place from 12 to 6 p.m. Join us in the beautiful outdoor venue of Silver City Park from noon till 6pm on Saturday, September 14, 2019 for the 2nd annual HARMONY on the Comstock Music Festival. Free parking, NO ADMISSION. Very family and dog friendly.

— Louise Kerr's Art Show and Celebration of Life Reception. 1 to 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s Art Center in Virginia City. Renowned American Artist, E. Louise Kerr, peacefully passed away in her Virginia City, Nevada home with her loved ones by her side. February 19, 1925 to November 13, 2018 A Celebration of Life, Art Show and Reception will be held at St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City, Saturday Sept. 14, 2019 1 to 4 p.m. Anyone who loved Louise and her Artwork is welcome.

— Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 week session or $45 drop ins.

— Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

— Carson Mall Wine Walk. 2 to 6 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson Street. Come sip and shop at the Carson Mall! New walkers $10, returning walkers $5. You will receive a wine glass which is yours to keep! — Virginia City Circa 1873 demonstration. 3 to 9:30 p.m. at the Red Dog Saloon, 76 North C Street. Come to Virginia City for history and an experience you won’t get anywhere else in the world! Start your day with a tour of Chollar Mine and continue to the V&T Railroad for a special trip to American Flats with music from the Black Iris Band.

— Toast of the Canyon Train in Virginia City. 5 to 7 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot, 4650 Eastgate Sliding Road. Journey into the Carson River Canyon on an intimate experience, perfect for date night. Enjoy white wine and appetizers as you travel on a 45-minute trip south of Carson City’s Eastgate Depot. The ride is filled with scenic views of the Carson River and the canyon walls as they echo the sounds of the train whistle. The experience is complete when the “Iron Horse” steams by the passenger cars to reattach to the train to pull it back up out of the canyon.

— Skate and scooter freestyle competition at Mills Park. 5 to 8 p.m. at 1111 E. William Street. This will be a freestyle competition where participants receive three 40 second runs to put together their best lines and biggest tricks. New this year: The skate park will be lighted for the later portions of the competition after dark. After each run, participants will be judged by experienced skating pros from The Wheelhouse, the winner of each category will receive a prize! — Carson Mall to host Family Movie Night featuring Aladdin. 5 to 7:30 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson Street. Come and join us for a movie in the mall! We will be watching the new Aladdin! Doors open at 5:00pm Movie starts at 5:30. Free for everyone. Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Make sure to bring your pillows and blankets. — Salon Series: Savor. 6 to 9 p.m. Sierra Music Society continues its popular Salon Series with P’Opera! soloists, delectable small bites, wonderful wines, and fun on Saturday, September 14, from 6 to 9 pm. We will present “Savor” in a beautiful home located in Southwest Reno. For just $75 you will enjoy wine tastings and food pairings.

— Carson City Bella Salon and Spa to host grand opening. 6:30 p.m. at 1910 E. College Parkway in Carson City. Bel Solé is the newest expansion of Carson City’s Bella Salon and Spa which is now offering a year-round boutique, all natural spray tanning, sugar-hair removal, and lash extensions. They’ll be hosting their grand opening party on Saturday, Sept. 14 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at their location at 1910 E. College Parkway in Carson City.

— Carson City Ghost Walk returns this Saturday. 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bob McFadden Plaza. For the 27th year, the spookiest historical tour of the capital city is returning this Saturday, June 1 with the Carson City Ghost Walk. The Carson City Ghost Walk is a seasonal historical tour of Carson City’s west side, a walking history lesson with a touch of the supernatural. Some of the stops on the tour include the Bliss Mansion, the Ferris Mansion, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Rinckel Mansion.

— Live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday-Saturday starting at 6:30-9:00ish.

— Saturday Night Star Party at Western Nevada College. 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Jack C. Davis Observatory, 2699 Vanpatten Ave. The Jack C Davis Observatory hosts free star parties on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month year round, starting at 7:30 p.m. (except when there is snow on the roads). The evening starts with a lecture on one of numerous topics and concludes with guided star viewing by one of our astronomers. Mike Thomas lectures 2nd Saturdays and Dr. Tom Herring lectures on 4th Saturdays.

— Edible Pedal 100 at Bowers Mansion. 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4005 Bowers Mansion Rd. Join us for our 9th Annual bike ride with gourmet BBQ and foodie ride stops – Edible Pedal 100! — C.O.D Casino car show in Minden. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at C.O.D. Casino, 1593 Esmerelda Ave. Come on down and explore the great motor history with plenty of cars that fit the bill. Classic cars of all makes and models will be present.

— Muscle Powered morning bicycle ride. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School. Meet at Fremont Elementary School in the South parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Typically, this ride consists of two 10-15 minute loops with varying pace depending on rider level. This is a “no drop” ride so no one will be left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. — Carson Valley Wedding Social. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sunridge Golf and Recreations. Welcome to Carson Valley’s first wedding social! — 'Squeeky Keys' documentary screening. 1 to 3 p.m. at Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City. Join local legend Squeek Steele for the screening of ‘Squeeky Keys’. This documentary chronicles the life of the world’s most prolific female piano player and Guinness World Record holder.

— Celebrate Constitution Week in Carson City with Daughters of the American Revolution. 2 to 3 p.m. at 911 E. Musser Street. Battle Born Chapter DAR and Ft. Churchill Society Children of the American Revolution invite the public to "Celebrate the Charters of Freedom" this Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019 at 2 p.m. in the Ormsby Room, located in the Sheriff's Office, 911 E. Musser Street, Carson City. Featured speaker is Jason Woodbury, District Attorney of Carson City who will speak on " Rascals and Rebels: Uprisings that Sparked America."
