Fall train rides, 'Light after Dark' fitness event, live music and more highlight Carson City area weekend events

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City area. Fall-themed train rides from the Virginia Truckee Railroad Company and the Nevada State Railroad Museum will be available on Saturday and Sunday. A virtual “Light After Dark” fitness event will be held on Saturday to support the Carson City-based Advocated to End Domestic Violence program. Combined with plenty of food specials and live music, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement! Read on for more information.

New safety guidelines for the state of Nevada have been enforced, so please make sure to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing.

Friday, October 16
Hauntober Returns to Virginia City (all day). Virginia City will be packed with month-long events through October in the spirit of Halloween. As one of the most haunted destinations in the country, Virginia City is the perfect place to get spooked this October. Celebrate the supernatural and all things unexpected with an entire month of events including the outhouse races, ghost tours, safe trick-or-treating, a goblin parade and a family fun Thomas the and Friends excursion on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.

Carson River Canyon Railbike Tours. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Visit Carson City, in partnership with the V&T Railway Commission, have announced an all-new attraction unlike any other in northern Nevada. Railbikes will run Tuesday-Sunday, four times a day 10 a.m., noon, 2p.m. and 4 p.m. Excursions are $45 per person. Tickets may be purchased online at vtrailway.com.

Eddy Street Vintage Market Pop-Up. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1235 Eddy Street in Gardnerville. Happy Halloween! Grab a friend and come shop with us this Halloween at Eddy Street Vintage Market! You won’t want to miss it.

Sarah Winnemucca Exhibition. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Genoa Courthouse Museum, 2304 Main St. The Sarah Winnemucca Exhibit Dedication event has arrived in Genoa. Doors open at 11:00 a.m. Dedication begins at noon, make sure to stop by!

Imbibe and Dine at Bank Saloon. 5 to 9 p.m. at 418 S. Carson St. Join us this Friday night at Bank Saloon for handcrafted cocktails and tasty food from Hot Rodz Catering Food Truck. They'll be serving fajitas, tacos, burgers and more.

KRD Rocks Bella Vita Bistro. 5:30 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. We have been booked to fill in for a band at Bella Vita Bistro. This will be our first live event back in Northern Nevada. Bella Vita has great food and atmosphere. We hope to see you there.

League of Women Voters Candidate Forum for Ackerman-Amodei. 6 p.m. The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, in partnership with Sierra Nevada Forums and AAUW Capital (NV) Branch will present a virtual election forum on October 16 beginning at 6 pm. The forums are co-sponsored by NGBN-TV and the Nevada Appeal.

Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic Night has returned to A to Zen Gift Shop in Carson City! Come join us for a live music event featuring several great artists. Masks and social distancing procedures will be in place.

Ev Musselman to perform at Living the Good Life. 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 1480 N. Carson St. Come enjoy the finale weekend outside with a night of live music with Ev Musselman. Please call ahead for seating.

Friday Night Karaoke at the Whiskey Tavern. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at 3481 Hwy 50 E. in Carson City. Come hang out with the Whiskey Tavern and J and M Productions as we sing the night away every Friday! Must be at least 21 years old.

Saturday, October 17
Celebrate the Fall Season on the Comstock with a ride on the Pumpkin Patch Train (all day). Take advantage of the crisp fall air and the gorgeous high desert scenery with a ride on the Virginia Truckee Railroad’s Pumpkin Patch Steam train. Traveling round trip from Virginia City, Nevada, The Pumpkin Patch train will be powered by Steam Engine #29, featuring a stop at the Gold Hill Depot Pumpkin Patch. Pick out your favorite gourd for carving or for pie making and create a lasting memory for your entire family.

Advocates to End Domestic Violence hosts virtual 'Light after Dark' fitness event. Carson City-based Advocates to End Domestic Violence will host a virtual version of its annual Light after Dark 5K/10K Walk, Run, Hike, Bike and Beyond awareness fitness event and fundraiser this Saturday, Oct. 17. Due to COVID-19, the Light after Dark Walk and Run has changed direction and is going virtual. This year's event, which is an annual fundraiser to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, is going to be different than previous years, as the Advocates organization will not be out at the Carson River with an illuminated path. Dayton High School Boosters Golf Tournament Fundraiser. 9 a.m. at Eagle Valley’s West Course, 3999 Centennial Park Drive. Come join us Oct. 17 for a day of fun at our 1st ever Dayton High School Boosters Golf Tournament on Eagle Valley’s West Course. Cost for each golfer is $100 and includes range balls and lunch. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m.

Carson City's Browsers Corner Book Store kicks off grand reopening. 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 711 E. Washington St. Browsers Corner Book Store, operated by the Friends of the Carson City Library, is having its grand reopening starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 with new hours being from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Nevada Wood Signs Class at HelloHandmade. 10 a.m. at 1754 Ironwood Drive in Minden. Pick a Nevada sign design of your choice to paint onto a 10″ x 16.5″ (Nevada Shaped) hanging wood sign. Design and wood colors need to be chosen at the time of registrations. Make a note of the design number before moving on to the next page.

Harvest Train Comes to Nevada State Railroad Museum. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2180 S. Carson St. Take a 30-minute steam train ride featuring historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad equipment. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, face coverings are required on board the train and capacity on trains will be limited to 50 percent.

Artist Reception at Artsy Fartsy Gallery. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 405 N. Nevada St. Join Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery as we celebrate one of our favorite artists, Louise Noel. Her whimsical and vibrant artwork graces many of our homes, now is your chance to grab another and meet this wonderfully talented artist.

Nevada Artists Association Autumn Show. 12 to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. The Nevada Artist Association is proud to present the 2020 “Autumn Show” and the beautiful works of Featured Artists Karen Kreyeski and Maggie Stillwell. All the work in these shows is from Nevada Artist Association members. These shows are open to the public through Oct. 23rd. NAA is the largest Fine Arts Gallery in the Carson-Tahoe area featuring work from over 140 Northern Nevada artists, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, gourds, jewelry, textile art, glass, pottery, prints, cards and more.

Carson City Symphony opens 37th season with virtual celebration of capital city history (all day). The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 37th season with a virtual community music and dance project celebrating Carson City history, the “Hank Monk Schottische” virtual performance project. Instrumental musicians and dancers of all ages are invited to participate.

Clear Creek Bowmen announces annual Turkey Shoot. The shoot will start between 8 and 9:30 a.m. at the Tim Meigs Carson City Archery Range located at Centennial Drive. The Clear Creek Bowmen will be holding their annual Turkey Shoot. It will be a 35 3D target, unmarked yardage shoot (range finders ok). No, you’re not going to be shooting at live turkeys, but you will be competing to win a frozen one!

Private Drum Lessons with Brandon Dodge. 1 to 3 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St. This class is a one-on-one session with you and your teacher, Brandon Dodge, geared towards learning drums or percussion in a personalized way. You’ll be able to learn it all: rock, jazz, or funk drums, keyboard instruments like the marimba, and non-western drums like djembe or congas.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.

Miller Counseling and Wellness Center began partnering with Douglas Center for Hope and Healing to offer grief support groups for adults in Carson City in 2024. There has been an amazing turnout, and the group appears to be filling a much-needed void in services to our community.
