Comment on Commentary from Supervisor Pete Livermore: “Let the people vote on the Nugget Project” by Dave Morgan
In response to dhataway: There is nothing wrong with trying to keep hope alive for an indoor recreation facility, but you are quite correct that based on the city’s current financial condition, just the operating costs of an indoor recreation center would far exceed the city’s ability to pay. One idea is to build the indoor recreation center and then open up only those parts or pieces that the city, in fact, can afford to operate. One aspect would be the gymnasium part that would accommodate indoor soccer and other emerging sports. One could assume that if it’s cheaper now to build a gym-only facility, there would be even greater savings to build a whole indoor recreation center. The city is pondering asking for federal stimulus funds to build it. It’s shovel ready. But without those stimulus funds, it could be argued that Nevada’s failing economy and bleak medium-term economic horizon should convince the city to settle for just a new gymnasium. Maybe attach it to the existing Community Center, perhaps as outlined by yourself.
