Late night vote in Washington brings $415 million to Lake Tahoe

Late Friday night, the U.S. House of Representatives joined the U.S. Senate in passing the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act of 2016, which will bring $415 million in future funding to Lake Tahoe over the next seven years. The decision brought cheers from many local agencies, including the League to Save lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

Agencies may begin prescribed fire operations Sunday at Lake Tahoe

Weather and conditions permitting, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations next week in areas on the South and East shores of Lake Tahoe. If conditions are favorable, operations may begin on Sunday, Nov. 6 and may continue through the week.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report for week of Oct. 24-30

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Oct. 24-30, 2016. This is the final week of work on the Downtown Corridor Improvement Project along Carson Street. The following streets will be impacted:

— Carson Street will be one lane in each direction with lane shifts through the week during daytime hours.

— Sunday night through Wednesday night starting at 8 p.m., there will be lane shifts for final striping.

— At this time, all side streets should be open.

— Robinson will be closed at Carson Street, both east and west side for the week, Monday through Friday.
— Carson Street will be open north and southbound Tuesday through Friday.

Both Lanes Open: NDOT nears Cave Rock tunnel extension completion at Lake Tahoe

The Nevada Department of Transportation has substantially completed a project to enhance traveler safety and roadside water quality on U.S. 50 in the Cave Rock area of Lake Tahoe nearly one month ahead of schedule.

All U.S. 50 travel lanes through Cave Rock are now open. Since the project’s start in May, traffic had previously been reduced to one lane in each direction through the Cave Rock tunnel.

Lake Tahoe draft health report notes environmental improvements, climate change challenges

The Lake Tahoe Basin saw continued environmental improvement over the last four years, but faces major challenges from climate change, according to a draft 2015 Threshold Evaluation Report released by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Temporary traffic closures will be in place on State Route 28 south of Incline Village in coming weeks as part of a Nevada Department of Transportation project to construct a shared use path and enhance roadway safety and water quality.

NDOT: Highway 50 Cave Rock tunnel extension construction 75 percent complete

With construction to extend the westbound U.S. 50 Cave Rock tunnel in Lake Tahoe more than 75 percent complete, the Nevada Department of Transportation is asking motorists to anticipate minor travel delays and changes to work zone traffic patterns as final elements of construction are completed.

Caltrans project to cause road closures and delays near Emerald Bay for two weeks

Those hoping to take a leisurely drive around Lake Tahoe's iconic Emerald Bay during the next couple of weeks will experience delays and detours because of a construction project set to begin Monday.

Caltrans will perform a full roadway closure of State Highway 89 near South Lake Tahoe from just south of the Cascade Creek Bridge to Bayview Campground and Inspiration Vista Point.

Obama addresses conservation and climate change at Lake Tahoe Summit

President Barack Obama was cheered enthusiastically Wednesday at the 20th Lake Tahoe Summit, an annual gathering of federal and state leaders from California and Nevada who are dedicated to protecting the Sierra's crown jewel.

"I've never been here," President Obama told the crowd Wednesday at Harvey's Outdoor Arena in Stateline. "Its not that I didn't want to come, but nobody invited me."

The President quipped he's sure to return, "though my transportation won't be as nice."

Burning Man Travel Advisory

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe would like to advise travelers going to the Burning Man Festival to obey posted speed limits, and to slow down and keep your distance while traveling through the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. The Tribe would like motorists to be aware of the dangers associated with high speeds on two lane highways; all State Routes on the reservation are two lane roads with very narrow shoulders.

Groundbreaking held for new pathway on State Route 28 in east Tahoe

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and 15 organizations came together Friday to break ground for the new pathway on State Route 28 in east Tahoe. The busy and narrow highway will be expanding for safety and water quality.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Water Resources Specialist John Cobourn has received a national award for his innovative approaches in programs addressing flash floods, environmentally friendly landscaping, Lake Tahoe’s water quality, and other water issues in northern Nevada.
