One might think that after Labor Day, it starts to get quiet around here. They would be mistaken. September is chock-full of adventure, starting with this weekend’s Virginia City International Camel Races and the Great Reno Balloon Races. You won’t want to miss the last of the Third Street Stage Concerts in McFadden Plaza: Shane Dwight is tonight’s featured performer. It’s the last day to see the Photography and Regular Art Show at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery, they’ll have their new Autumn Show on display Sunday.

What a day we have in store. Sure, it’s off to school for the kids in Carson City, but this will be a day to remember for another reason, the solar eclipse. A huge swath of our country will see a total solar eclipse, but here in Carson City, only 81 percent of totality will be achieved. That means there is NO time that you can look at the sun without risking injury. I repeat: do NOT look directly at the sun. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival bids farewell to another year with a free concert in McFadden Plaza featuring the talented members of the Mile High Jazz Band.

The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has buddied up with something new this year. Today and tomorrow, the Jukebox International Film Festival features fifteen contestants competing in four categories. Youth Theater Carson City and Western Nevada Musical Theater alum, Grant Davis, is back in town to show support for ‘Something Like Summer,’ the Australian musical he stars in. Make sure you’re in McFadden Plaza around 5 p.m. Davis will be performing songs from the movie and music from his debut album on the Third Street Stage.

State Veterinarian: Dozens of horses statewide with reported disease exposure, none confirmed in Carson City

The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) began receiving accounts of horses exposed to equine herpes virus type 4 (EHV-4) and Streptococcus equi bacterial infection — also known as strangles or equine distemper — as of Saturday, Feb. 18, NDA public information officer Rebecca Allured said in a press release late Wednesday.

Sierra Foot and Ankle taking in donations for Pets of the Homeless, FISH

Sierra Foot and Ankle, a podiatry practice with offices in Carson City and Gardnerville, is serving as a donation site for Pets of the Homeless and Friends In Service Helping (FISH) during the months of December and January, a press release said.

Nevada Humane Society Animal Files: Rabies, vaccines and the bigger picture

In case you missed it, the Washoe County Health District recently put out a notice that multiple bats infected with rabies were found in Washoe County.

In one of the cases, four domestic pets came into contact with one of the rabid bats. It’s a situation no one wants to think about, and one that hasn’t happened in Washoe County in decades, but it’s time to remind people about the importance of vaccinating their pets and why it’s so important to everyone around you.

Health officials: Steady increase of flu cases in Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting a steady increase of positive Influenza flu cases. Overall, Carson City, Lyon and Douglas counties saw 27 cases testing positive for influenza.

About 59 percent of those tested were positive for Influenza strain B, which is a slightly higher percentage of this specific strain than was seen in previous years at this time. CCHHS encourages providers to continue to report positive influenza testing to the Health Department as it helps to monitor influenza activity.

National nonprofit Pets of the Homeless based in Carson City receives record 2015 donations

Pets of the Homeless, the only national nonprofit organization that is focused on feeding and providing emergency veterinary care to pets of homeless people, has received over $52,000 from a number of foundations in 2015.

Carson City Health Department makes FluMist nasal spray vaccine available

After a long delay from the manufacturer, Carson City Health and Human Services says the FluMist nasal spray vaccine option is now available at both our Carson City and Douglas County clinic locations.

Carson City Health and Human Services will host flu vaccination clinics this Thursday and next Tuesday as it continues to help build community immunity. By getting a flu vaccine this year, citizens are not only protecting themselves but others from falling ill to the flu.

City Parks: Coyote attacks on dogs continue along Carson City area trails

There have been more reported cases of coyotes attacking dogs along city hiking trails in east Carson City, according to the Parks and Recreation Department.

Many of these incidents have happened on trails along the Riverview Park Wetlands Trails at the east end of Fifth Street and Marsh Road, and the trails on Prison Hill east of South Edmonds Drive, according to the Parks and Recreation Department.

Upcoming flu vaccination clinics in Carson City, Douglas County

Community flu vaccination events are being held in October and November in Carson City and Douglas County.
Each fall, the flu returns and brings with it the fever, cough, sore throat, congestion, muscle aches and fatigue that many of us dread.

Free health clinic this weekend in Yerington and Oct. 16-18 in Carson City

Remote Area Medical, an organization dedicated to providing free, quality health care services, will host free pop-up clinics during the next two weekends for adults and children in Lyon County and Carson City.

There are no eligibility requirements and identification isn't necessary. Services are provided on a first come basis. The first pop-up clinic will be this weekend in Yerington, Oct. 9-11, and the second will be in Carson City the following weekend, Oct. 16-18.
