Carson Horseshoe Club Closure

UPDATE: Frank Streshley, Tax and License Division Chief in Carson City, said the Nevada Gaming Control Board "was informed of the temporary closure of the Carson Horse Club in advance of the closure."

He said the Carson Horseshoe Club must make "reasonable accommodations" to pay their patrons casino tokens or any vouchers. He was not sure if the Horseshoe Club uses the cash in-cash out vouchers.

Senator Square: Carson High School Culinary Arts program receives national recognition

Carson High School Culinary Arts has been named to the 2014-15 Elite 50 by the National Center for Hospitality Studies by the Sullivan University. The award recognizes an exclusive group of high schools that excel in the areas of culinary arts, baking and pastry arts.

We're No. 1: USA Today readers pick Carson City as best capital city travel destination

The readers of USA Today have chosen Carson City as the “best travel worthy state capital in the nation,” officials of the 10 Best contest announced this morning.

The win gives Carson City bragging rights, a nice shot in the arm for local tourism, a national and international spotlight and citywide pride that comes with living in the state capital.

USA Today 10 Best Contest ends, winning city to be announced Wednesday

The voting deadline has ended for a USA Today contest where Carson City is among several vying for "best travel worthy state capital." As of Monday morning before the contest closed, Carson City had been leading in the reader poll.

The announcement will be made 9 a.m. Wednesday morning here. Along with bragging rights, the result of a win would provide a nice shot in the arm for local tourism.

Deadline nears, Carson City leading in USA Today 10 Best readers poll

Maintaining a lead through much of December, the voting deadline nears for a USA Today contest where Carson City is among several vying for "the best travel worthy state capital."

Now through Monday, readers can pick their favorite state capital city destination by casting a vote. A digital clock found here tells you how many days, hours, minutes and seconds are left to vote. As of Saturday morning, Carson City remained in the number one spot followed by Juneau, Alaska and Boise, Idaho.

With one week left in USA Today’s competition for best capital city in the nation, the Carson City Visitors Bureau is urging Nevadans to continue to cast their votes.
In the weeks since the contest was announced online, Carson City has bounced between first, second and third places. However, it is now holding steady in the top position.

Kaempfer Crowell Law Firm to donate $3,500 to Honor Flight Nevada, Vietnam Tour Project

Nevada law firm Kaempfer Crowell will present a $3,500 donation on Friday to Honor Flight Nevada, a non-profit organization dedicated to transporting veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials honoring their service and sacrifices. The presentation will take place at noon on the steps of the Laxalt Building in Carson City.

A longtime local man who recently developed a Facebook page for sharing Carson City photos wants to kick it up a notch with a USA Today poll running now that is asking readers to pick the 10 best travel worthy state capitals to visit.

Carson High School seniors recently volunteered for the 2014 General elections in Carson City. Emely Lopez, Claudia Vazquez, Kimberly Torres, Karina Munoz, Maria Pacheco, Deanna Earwicker, and Amber Seifert spent the day at the polls welcoming and assisting voters. Each year, CHS government teachers work in conjunction with the Carson City Clerk-Recorder’s office to provide student volunteers for the elections. We’d like to wish out-going Clerk-Recorder Alan Glover the best of luck in his retirement and we look forward to continuing our relationship with that office as Ms.

Sikh Temple in Reno honors Rajan Zed

In a remarkable interfaith gesture, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed was honored with a siropa (robe of honor) at Sikh Temple of Reno (USA). Temple President Gurmail Singh Uppal presented the siropa to Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism.

Talking on the occasion, Rajan Zed stressed that all religions should work together for a just and peaceful world. Dialogue would bring us mutual enrichment, he added.

2015 Amgen Tour of California to host first two pro women's cycling stages at South Lake Tahoe

To observe the 10th anniversary edition of the Amgen Tour of California, organizers of the race announced Monday that the first two stages of the expanded women’s portion of the race would be hosted by Tahoe South, “America’s Best Lake,” (USA Today, Aug. 2012) May 8-9, 2015. The competition will continue in Sacramento, May 10, 2015, with a third racing stage, the same day as the overall men’s start of the Amgen Tour of California.

With more than $100 million in revitalization efforts this year, a mountain of changes are underway at Tahoe South, the “No. 1 Ski Destination” (USA Today 2014), providing more upscale lodging, entertainment, shopping, skiing and outdoor recreation for the 2014-15 winter season.

A total lunar eclipse will be viewable early Wednesday morning across all of Nevada and California, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. The eclipse will occur from 2:15 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. with peak viewing of the total eclipse roughly from 3:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. Mostly clear conditions expected. Bring a jacket.

Chamber golf tournament raises money to send Carson culinary team to competition

The Carson City Chamber held its fifth annual Chairman’s Golf Tournament at Silver Oak Golf on Friday to benefit Pro Start and Skills USA students at Carson High. Though the weather was cold, spirits were high and 39 golfers were able to raise $3,500 to send the culinary team to state competition.

The evening BBQ feast was prepared by a great group of kids that included BBQ ribs, sausages, chicken, mashed potatoes, salads, desserts, and more. Not your basic BBQ, by any means.

Senator Square: Carson City Chamber to hold golf fundraiser for CHS

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce is holding the 5th Annual Chairman’s Scramble Golf Tournament on September 26 at Silver Oak Golf Course. All proceeds to benefit Carson High Culinary Pro Start and SkillsUSA organizations. The event has a 12:30 PM shotgun start and costs $25 per person. You must RSVP by calling 882-1565.

Attract tourist dollars to Nevada by using Highway 95

As an incentive for Telsa and other companies to build in the Reno – Tahoe Industrial Center on USA Parkway and benefit Nevada, Interstate 11 should be built from Yerrington to tie into the Reno – Tahoe Industrial Center and to I-80. This should be presented to Telsa now.

Interstate 11 should be built parallel to US Highway 95 from Las Vegas to Tonapah on a straight line from Tonaph to Yerrington. Also I- 580 should be extended from Carson City to Yerrington which would give a direct route to Carson City and Reno.

Senator Square: Full speed ahead with 2,117 students enrolled at Carson High

Welcome back to the third installment of Senator Square. We had an exciting week at CHS including a video message from our rivals from Douglas High School. Their staff challenged our staff to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. More than 50 CHS teachers and staff showed up for the challenge, as we could never let the Tigers out-do us.

5th Annual Chairman’s Scramble Golf Tournament

Thanks to our golfers last year, we were able to raise $2,000 to present to Carson High to send their best and brightest kids to competitions within the state and nationally, and we are pleased to report they did amazingly well.

We want to offer you the opportunity to again enjoy a day of golf on one of Carson City's finest golf courses followed by a very special barbecue to be cooked and served by the Culinary Pro Start and Skills USA students under the direction of the ProStart NATIONAL Teacher of the Year, Penny Reynolds who oversees the culinary programs at Carson High.
