High Sierra Swing Dance Club offers a free, one-hour lesson in basic West Coast swing at its monthly dance party May 17 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. Tim Renner offers the free lesson from 6:30-7:30 p.m., followed by a social dance to practice your new skills from 7:30-10 p.m. Partners are not required. High Sierra Swing Dance Club invites the public to its seventh-annual Spring Ball dinner-dance on April 26 at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St., Carson City.

The semi-formal/formal-attire evening begins with hors d'oeuvres and no-host cocktails at 5:30 p.m. and continues with dance performances at 6:30, buffet dinner at 7, open dancing 8-11 pm to West Coast swing,
nightclub two-step, country two-step, waltz and Latin tunes.

Kids Adventure Games at Mammoth Mountain set for Aug. 2, registration underway

Registration has begun for the 2014 Kids Adventure Games, the premier race for children ages six to 14 that features teams of two competing in mountain biking, hiking, zip lines, a Tarzan rope swing, giant Slope-n-Slide, cargo nets, mud pits and more.

The race is scheduled for August 2, 2014 at Mammoth Mountain as part of a new, exciting eight-race series, the Kids Adventure Games, taking place at various locations across the nation. Event details are as follows:

WNC Baseball: Fife, Harber help Wildcats gain doubleheader split

Through 13 innings of a Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Friday, College of Southern Idaho denied Western Nevada College from putting a crooked number on the scoreboard. But with one swing by Alex Fife that changed as his homer brought in three runs, helping the Wildcats to a doubleheader split.

Fife’s homer was part of a four-run seventh inning that snapped a 1-1 tie and propelled the Wildcats to a 5-1 victory at John L. Harvey Field in Carson CIty. The Golden Eagles won the opener 6-2 behind the pitching of southpaw Kolton Brost.

Carson City GATE students get schooled in sheriff's office K9 patrol

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit hosted a group of students from the Gifted and Academically Talented Education program from the Carson City School District Wednesday at the Fuji Park Pavilion.

Twenty-seven 6th and 7th grade students from Eagle Valley and Carson Middle Schools spent the day with the K9 Unit learning how the dogs work in drug detection, patrol work, and tracking. Demonstrations were done with the dogs and their handlers giving the students first hand experience at just what the teams are capable of.

WNC Baseball: Karnos, Roque Key Wildcats’ SWAC-Opening Victory

Pitching decided the outcomes of a Scenic West Athletic Conference-opening baseball doubleheader Saturday at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

Freshman right-hander Max Karnos pitched a four-hit complete game to provide Western Nevada College with a 7-1 victory over Salt Lake in the opener, but the Bruins battled back for a 6-2 win in game two behind the stingy hurling of Jason Jourdan and Eric Carter.

“Salt Lake has a good team. We each won one; that’s about right,” WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said.

Carson City Supervisors agree to 1/8th cent sales tax to fund city projects

In an emotionally-charged issue that brought out passionate pleas for and against, Carson City supervisors agreed to a 1/8th-cent sales tax to fund several infrastructure projects.

The final vote was 4 to 1, with Supervisor Jim Shirk dissenting. John McKenna, who was seen as the swing vote, agreed in the end which allowed for a required two-thirds majority.

Carson City man jailed, allegedly knocks phone out of hands of woman calling for help

A Carson City man was arrested Thursday on a domestic violence charge and a related felony charge after he allegedly prevented the victim, a family member, from calling 911.
Jeremy David Smith, 19, was placed into custody at 11:52 p.m. in the 4600 block of Oak Street.

WNC Wildcats sign with Division I baseball programs

CARSON CITY — One of Coach D.J. Whittemore’s main goals each season is to find a home at the next level for each of his Western Nevada College sophomore baseball players.

Whittemore scratched three names off his relocation list on Wednesday when pitcher Christian Stolo, outfielder Conor Harber and middle infielder Jack Hall signed NCAA Division I letters of intent during a ceremony attended by many of their teammates on the Carson City campus.

Woman jailed on felony battery charge after allegedly spitting on fireman, scratching deputy

A Sun Valley woman faces a felony battery charge and a gross misdemeanor charge of child neglect following an incident Tuesday in which she allegedly spit on a firefighter and used her fingernails to scratch a Carson City deputy in the wrist causing injury.

Capri Johnson, 26, was jailed on the charges and has a bail of $32,500. According to the arrest report, officers were called at 4:41 p.m. to assist Carson City Fire Department personnel with a woman with two small children who was passed out intoxicated in the 1700 block of North Carson Street.
