Swing Into Spring dinner dance

High Sierra Swing Dance Club invites the public to its fifth-annual Swing Into Spring dinner-dance gala and “Local Celebrities Who Think They Can Dance” contest on April 28 at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St. No-host cocktails at 6 p.m., celebrity dancers’ contest at 6:30, sit-down dinner at 7, dancing to a variety of DJ music at 8. Requested attire is formal or semi-formal. Cost is $32. Free swing dance lesson, monthly dance

High Sierra Swing Dance Club offers a free, two-hour lesson in basic West Coast swing at its monthly dance party March 24 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. Tim Renner and Donna Ewing offer the free lesson from 6-8 p.m., followed by a social dance to practice your new skills from 8-10:30 p.m. Partners are not required. The social dance is free for lesson participants, $7 for members of swing clubs and $10 for nonmembers.

President Obama Talks Up Natural Gas Development In Remarks Today In Las Vegas

President Barack Obama visited Las Vegas today on a swing through the West, talking up energy development to create jobs and reduce the country’s dependence on foreign oil.

In comments delivered at the United Parcel Service hub on East Arby Lane, President Obama said development of natural gas reserves would serve both these purposes.

The president jogged out to loud, enthused cheers from a clearly friendly crowd.

DFG top stories and accomplishments for 2011

The year of 2011 was anything but quiet for the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG).
Pesky bears, a roaming gray wolf, significant poaching arrests, tsunami relief work and dramatic wildlife rescues were among the stories that captured the public’s attention.
DFG also welcomed new Director Charlton H. Bonham, who was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in August.

Movie Reivew: 'Immortals' won't live long in movie history

Sometimes one wonders if casting calls in Hollywood consisted of the males baring pectorals and the women an ability to look good but not have to have any actings skills. And for directors to have a good visual sense but no idea of what a story it supposed to do.

That sentiment is triggered by the movie "Immortals," currently flickering at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City.

Nevada Day crowds relatively well behaved

The nice weather brought out the crowds for Nevada Day, but few caused any problems for local law enforcement.

"We had a pretty quiet Nevada Day," said Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong. "We had a couple of spot incidents, most related to alcohol, but nothing serious."

Carson City Supervisors vote to proceed with Nugget Project

The Carson City Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 tonight to move forward with the $49 million Carson City Center/Nugget Project.

The motion to proceed to the next step of this controversial development included a commitment by the city of $11.3 million in redevelopment funds, $12 million to come from recently increased landfill fees, and a one-time expenditure of $500,000 from the city's utility fund.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents a day of workshops by renowned West Coast swing instructor Michelle Kinkaid on Aug. 27 at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St., Carson City. Kinkaid will teach three workshops: 2 p.m. “When Is It OK to Play, and How?”; 3:15 p.m. “Dancing to the ‘1’ in a Phrase”; and 4:30 p.m. “WCS Today and How it is Evolving.” Cost: $20 for one workshop, $50 for all three. There will be a 90-minute dinner break then at 7 p.m., Kinkaid will teach a group intermediate WCS lesson for $10 for all dancers.
