Old Fashioned Fourth of July to be held at Fort Churchill

Silver Springs, Nev. – Celebrate Independence Day the old fashioned way with traditional games, homemade toys and crafts, and sweet treats from the 1800s. Activities for all ages will include: sack races, three-legged races, quoits (ring toss), bean bag toss, baseball, watermelon seed spitting contest, and hand-cranked ice cream. Bring a blanket and a picnic lunch and plan to spend the afternoon enjoying the park.

Americorps Volunteers are Summertime Mentors at Boys and Girls Clubs

An Americorps National Civilian Community Corps Team, Green Four, will be working with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Mason Valley to mentor children enrolled in its summer program.

During the team’s six week engagement, the seven young adults will serve over 150 children spread between the Yerington, Silver Springs and Dayton Boys and Girls Club sites.

Pony Express makes its way through Carson City, Jacks Valley and into Genoa

The Pony Express made its way into Carson City on Wednesday afternoon, heading into town with a breeze and about 40 minutes behind schedule. The mochila exchange was made at Second and Curry streets. It had arrived in the capital city after a stop at Fort Churchill State Park in Silver Springs.

The Pony Express then went through Jacks Valley on its way to Genoa before heading over Kingsbury Grade and onward to Lake Tahoe.

Lyon County man gets life in prison for 2017 murder of Silver Springs woman and her parents

A 50-year-old Silver Springs man was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole and eight to 20 years in Nevada State Prison on three counts of first degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon, each count consecutive to the other, said Lyon County District Attorney Stephen B. Rye.

SET deputies make Friday night arrests for possession of meth, heroin near Goni

Carson City Special Enforcement Team deputies arrested four people Friday night after Nevada Highway Patrol alerted dispatch to a vehicle that was failing to maintain its lane, and NHP required assistance in locating the vehicle.

Carson City area weather: Snow possible on valley floor Tuesday, rain showers into weekend

UPDATE 4:17PM: The National Weather Service in Reno, which had said snow levels were expected to fall to the valley floors, changed their forecast model late Monday afternoon, lessening the chances for any snow spillover to the valley floors. There's still a chance, but it is less than originally forecasted Monday morning.

The next round of storms moving into the region may actually be cold enough to bring snow showers down to the valley floors early Tuesday morning, including the Carson City and Reno areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Carson City man arrested for DUI causing death

A Carson City man was arrested in the 3100 block of Debbie Way Thursday morning for a DUI causing death warrant and failure to exercise due care warrant.

Mark Riesen was arrested after deputies were dispatched to the residence to complete a warrant service.

Both warrants were issued out of Carson City Justice Court on May 1, 2019.

He was taken into custody without incident.

Bail: $30,000

— A 40-year-old Silver Springs woman was booked on two additional warrants while in custody at the Carson City Jail.
