Beginning this Wednesday, Feb. 19, the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is expanding its days of operation.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities over the next three days. Restaurants in Carson City will host Valentine’s Day specials on Friday. Plus there's the first of 5 days of Valentine-themed festivities that begins at Carson Mall; an open house at Bethlehem Lutheran School, a CASA information hour, a Carson City School District meeting regarding proposed middle school zone modification. With sunny skies and daytime highs in the 50s, Tuesday is shaping up to be a great day around the capital city. Muscle Powered will host morning and evening walks, plus there's an assortment of meetings, club gatherings, art showings, a local school board meeting and more. At the end of the day, there's no better way to cap off the evening than by celebrating, with your sweetheart, music about love. Capital City Hoops, a local non-profit organization, is hosting a free basketball clinic for boys and girls in grades 2nd through 8th grade. The event will be held Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020 at Carson High School.

Most state legislatures are about to begin their annual lawmaking session. It happens every year in 46 states, as lobbyists and lawmakers flock to statehouses to begin the process of determining regulations.

Carson City's newest legislator arrived a year too early for session, finding himself confused by the lack of activity at the State Legislature Friday morning.

When asked what laws he was most interested in this year, he began giving vague talking points, as a true politician would.

"Well in the capitol of Nevada, the bucks stops here," he said. "You've got questions, and we've got antlers."

He then kissed a baby and winked at a photographer before trotting off into the dawn.

County managers representing Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, Storey, Churchill and Mineral counties gathered Wednesday in Carson City as a part of Northern Nevada Development Authority's annual “State of the Counties” meeting.

Returning from the holiday weekend, activities Tuesday around the capital city include the weekly gathering of the Carson City Toastmasters at Max Casino, a fundraiser at Pizza Factory in Carson City for a lifelong local and coach who has been ill, art showings and more.

For the second year in a row, Adams Hub for Innovation in Carson City is collaborating with Entrepreneurs Assembly, The Governor’s Office of Economic Development and the Warsaw School of Economics to bring 10 very exciting Polish tech startups to explore potential collaborations and the Nevada business climate for their respective wares. This is part of a program funded by the EU, the Polish Government, and the Warsaw School of Economics.

The penalties for safety violations levied by the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration against employers who are not in compliance have gone up, effective Jan. 15.

“To be able to come into a legislative session almost immediately after an election and say, ‘OK, here’s some priorities of things that we should get done’ and for us to be able to execute that, I think speaks to his leadership,” state Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, D-Las Vegas, said.

The Andersen Ranch Estates Subdivision will be one topic of discussion at the upcoming Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting tomorrow, Thursday Jan. 16.

The proposed development plan for the new subdivision was approved at the December planning commission meeting, during which the commission recommended approval of the project map with a 4-2 vote, with one vote absent.

The Board of Supervisors will review the Andersen Ranch Estates Tentative Map this Thursday, January 16th.  The special session starts at 5:30pm at the Sierra Room of the Community Center at 851 Williams Street, Carson City.
