Nevada Artists Association Spring Art Show winners announced

Winners of the Spring Art Show at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery announced. First place went to the following artists in each of the four categories:

Oil and Acrylic, Pamela Black of Reno. Water Media, Ronnie Rector of Incline Village. Photography, Mike Black of Reno. In the Other category, a wood sculpture by Ralph Hacker of Carson City.

Best of Show was awarded to Nancy Giannini for here oil painting "Valley of the Moon."

CCAI Nevada Neighbors Talk: We Might Should Could

On Wednesday, March 26, the Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] will present a talk by artist Justin Favela. His illustrated talk, We Might Should Could is the next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series.

The talk will take place at 7pm at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St, Carson City. There will be an informal reception for Mr. Favela preceding the event at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

Area artists work on display at the Carson City Business Resource Innovation Center

The Capital City Arts Initiative opened its exhibition, BRIC Art 4, with artwork by eight area artists at the Carson City Business Resource Innovation Center on Wednesday. The exhibition will remain at the BRIC through early September 2014.

Western Nevada College photo exhibition define humanity, innocence, hope

A compelling and poignant photography exhibition is showing in the galleries of Western Nevada College in Carson City. Reno-based artists Jeff Ross and Susan Mantle share their photography through Friday, Oct. 18.

In the Main Gallery, Ross invites visitors to contemplate "The Faces of St. Vincent’s," photographs and reflections of people in poverty who are being helped through St. Vincent’s Catholic Charities program.

Carson City 'History in Motion' Lecture on Thursday, Sept. 19

Carson City Historical Society presents a free lecture "Carson City's History in Motion" by Mary Fischer on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The lecture will be at The Business Resource Innovation Center, The BRIC, which is a partnership of Carson City Library, Office of Business Development, Building, Engineering, Planning, and Business Licensing, at 108 E. Proctor St.

Carson City Library summer enrichment programs bridge opportunity gap for local youth

Between June 7 and August 4 the Carson City Library engaged a record breaking 2,750 youth, ages 6 – 17, in signups for the 2013 summer reading program and attendance in summer learning activities. In that time, more than 21,788 items circulated from the library’s youth collection, primarily traditional books but also e-readers like Kindles, iPads, PlayAways and PlayAway Views.

Nevada Expressions II Comes to Carson City: Art Show and Sale to Benefit Historic Preservation on the Comstock

After a successful run in Reno at the Sierra Arts Foundation Gallery, the Nevada Expressions II Art Show and Sale will come to Carson City. The opening is on Friday, April 26, 10 am – 8 pm, at the Great Basin Art Gallery at 110 South Curry Street and the show will run through Sunday.

The public is invited to the artists’ reception, Friday 4 – 8 pm. Stop by to meet and see the work of 25 of Nevada’s leading contemporary artists. The work is primarily paintings with some jewelry, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media.

North Lake Tahoe SnowFest first 10 days in March

North Lake Tahoe celebrates its long winter season with SnowFest, a 10-day carnival and one of the region’s most popular annual family celebrations. SnowFest is scheduled for March 1-10 and will be held at a variety of venues throughout North Lake Tahoe.

In its 32nd year, SnowFest, presented by the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/ Resort Association, is expected to draw thousands of attendees, with the majority of events free to spectators.

Carson City Christmas Time Art Show at BAC

The Nevada Artists Association will present the Christmas Time Art Show at the Carson City's Brewery Arts Center Gallery. NAA artists will be exhibiting fine art in paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery and glass. Shoppers looking for those special one of a kind gifts will be delighted with the art at the BAC Gallery, which will be open daily, now through Christmas, including Sundays from 10am to 4pm. North Lake Tahoe snow transformed into art at Carve Tahoe

Prestigious snow carvers from around the world will call North Lake Tahoe home February 8-12, 2013 for the region’s first-ever Carve Tahoe competition, with the judging take place February 13, 2013.

The weeklong international snow sculpture contest is specifically geared for spectators who will view firsthand 20-ton blocks of pure snow shaped and carved into breathtaking masterpieces. The competing teams are the best of the best – selected from the event’s top applicants and representing more than 20 countries.

V&T McKeen Motor Car designated as National Historic Landmark

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar on Wednesday announced the designation of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad McKeen Motor Car #70 based in Carson City as one of 27 national historic landmarks.
Calling the McKeen Motor Car #70, Virginia & Truckee Railway Motor Car #22, "the best surviving example of the first commercially viable application of internal combustion power in a self-propelled railroad car" the designation possess exceptional value and quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States, Salazar said.

Contemporary painting featured at Carson City Library on Wednesday

Nevada Neighbors, the Capital City Arts Initiative’s ongoing series of illustrated public talks, will present a talk on contemporary painting by Cassandra Coblentz. Her talk, Conversations in Contemporary Painting, will take place on Wednesday, October 10 at 7pm at the Carson City Library, 900 N Roop Street, Carson City. Preceding her talk, there will be an informal reception for Ms. Coblentz at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

With Four Feet of Snow, Tahoe Ski Conditions Are Ideal

(NORTH LAKE TAHOE, California/Nevada) – It just doesn’t get any better. March came in like a lion, with a series of storms leaving 4 feet of new snow at North Lake Tahoe ski resorts’ upper elevations. Reno-Tahoe International Airport to undergo $40 million in renovations

Beginning today the Reno-Tahoe International Airport will be undergoing $40 million in renovations, including a ticket lobby with a Lake Tahoe theme. The Gateway Project, which will bring about 275 jobs now through April 2013, features an upgrade to the baggage claim area, creating a first floor single security checkpoint, plus new retail and places to eat.

Annual Student Art Exhibition

The annual student exhibits fill all three galleries at the Carson City campus, spreads throughout the Fallon campus, and includes student and faculty creations from the Douglas campus and rural teaching centers.
Works are as diverse as the college's course offerings - from painting and drawing to multimedia art, electronic arts, printmaking, photography, sculpture and pottery.

Sculptor Mischell Riley Donates Sculptures to Dayton School Garden

Dayton Intermediate School’s newly developing school garden will boast two large sculptures by internationally known sculptor Mischell Riley.

Riley, who is well known for work such as the 3-story high bronze lion at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, has donated two of her pieces to enhance the school’s garden landscape.

Carson City planners today will consider a special use permit to install a series of solar panels at Eagle Valley Middle School.

Citizens Protest Spending, Big Government at Carson City Tea Party Rally

A crowd of about 600 people gathered around the courtyard surrounding the Nevada State Capitol for the tea party rally. Many held signs condemning big-government policies, calling for Senator Harry Reid’s defeat, protesting tax increases, and ridiculing President Barack Obama.
