Half Days, Holidays, and Early Releases for Carson City Schools through November

Through the end of November there will be five days off for school children due to holidays, three minimum days, and one early release day.

It is also International Walk to School Day, so be prepared to see a lot more school children walking with their parents and friends to school along sidewalks and crossing streets. Among other featured events include the launch of "Trailblazing Nevada,” a new museum experience inside Battle Born Hall at the Nevada State Capitol, a fundraiser at Firehouse Subs for a Carson City cancer patient, a GOP open house, a talk about climate change at WNC and more.

Robotics Camp at WNC gives Carson City area youth opportunity to learn STEM concepts

CARSON CITY — They don’t have to drive 9 hours to Legoland to share the joy of what can be created with plastic construction toys. LEGOs have been only part of the Robotics Camp at Western Nevada College this week as area youngsters have been touched by the wonders of science and physics.

When the Carson City Library was undergoing renovations earlier this year, it outsourced its “Story Time” program for youngsters to other locations, including the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

Kid-sized 'Peanutcracker' comes to Carson City this Friday and Saturday

“Peanutcracker – The Story In A Nutshell,” is a kid-sized version of the holiday classic, “The Nutcracker,” told in 45-minutes by 50 local school school children. Performed by Sierra Nevada Ballet, there will be performances Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center.

Food For Thought, Inc. will continue its successful Summer Lunch Program during the 2017 season. The program provides free and nutritious lunches to all children ages 2 to 18. Lunch will be served daily 11am-12:30pm, Monday thru Friday, at two locations in Carson City starting June 5 until August 18.

They may hit hard on the court, but the Carson Victory Rollers have a soft side, too.

"We're the sweethearts of the leagues around here," said CVR Events Coordinator Crystal Blackeye. "Sometimes they get into it with each other, but the other teams mended their ways because of us and became legit."

Bicycling, walking to school promoted during Nevada Moves week March 13-17

Carson City school children as well as though throughout the state will take part in organized events that promote walking or bicycling to school during Nevada Moves Week, held March 13 through March 17.

East Fork Professional Firefighters donate 204 new coats to Douglas County children

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. – East Fork Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 3726 collected $3,436 from its members, including an individual donation of $1,000, to purchase 204 new, warm winter coats as part of the Operation Warm Coats for Kids Foundation. Coats will be distributed to school district officials Tuesday, Dec. 20.

The first drop-off is at C.C. Meneley Elementary School in Gardnerville at 9 a.m. and continues throughout the day at Douglas County Schools.

Saturday's Carson City Holiday Crawl to raise funds for local school children in need

Downtown Carson City businesses will be offering special signature food and drink items during the second annual Holiday Crawl this Saturday.

“We’re going to have bands at Telegraph Square and McFadden Plaza, and DJs and karaoke all around,” said Meliah Gonzales. “There really is going to be something for everyone.”

A Holiday Craft Show at Browsers Corner Bookstore will give you a head start on that gift list; consider a Friends of the Carson City Library Membership for your more bookish friends. The World Championship doesn’t begin until tomorrow, so get your sports fix with the Texans/Broncos match-up in tonight’s Monday Night Football game.

A collaboration of agencies and organizations officially kicked off the 2016 Holiday with a Hero campaign on Wednesday with a goal of giving at least 200 homeless children in Carson City a Christmas experience by providing them gift cards to spend on themselves prior to the holiday.

Harvest Train arrives in Carson City for second annual run

Harvest time at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (NSRM) started Saturday in Carson City with a cornucopia of family fun and entertainment.

The Harvest Train returned to Carson City Saturday morning for another two-weekend run in October, steaming into Wabuska Station to begin its celebration of the fall season.

Power outage affects more than 12,400 NV Energy customers throughout Carson City

UPDATE 630PM: NV Energy reports a handful of outages with between 14-25 customers without power this evening in Carson City.

UPDATE 5PM: NV Energy reports 5,626 customers remain without power with the number of outages reduced to two in Carson City.
The outages are centered on South Carson Street and Stewart Street and Fairview and East Fifth Street. NV Energy says the power should be restored by 7:30 p.m. The power company posted this note on its web page:

City of Fallon 9/11 Memorial

Summit Cleaning Services Joins with Food For Thought to Combat Local Childhood Hunger

Latest phone scam: Carson City resident targeted by so-called firefighters association

Another phone scam is making its way around Carson City. The latest involves a telephone number with a 775 area code and an Incline Village prefix in which the perpetrator says he’s collecting money on behalf of the association of firefighters.

Local Non-Profit Making a Difference, One Meal at a Time

Food For Thought, Inc. in Carson City published its annual Holiday Letter and announced its 2014/2015 distribution numbers. During the 2014/2015 school year, Food For Thought’s Backpack Program distributed 13,509 bags of food that contained 54,036 meals to food insecure elementary, middle and high school children in Carson City. In the summer of 2015, the program provided free lunches to children at two locations within Carson City. The innovative 2015 Summer Program served over 4,500 meals.

Nearly 240 Carson City school children were treated Wednesday to an early Christmas that was made possible from Santa’s capital city connection of volunteers, contributors and a community that continues to give of itself in cash and time to those who would have otherwise gone without.
