Latest phone scam: Carson City resident targeted by so-called firefighters association
Another phone scam is making its way around Carson City. The latest involves a telephone number with a 775 area code and an Incline Village prefix in which the perpetrator says he’s collecting money on behalf of the association of firefighters.
A Carson Now reader alerted us to the phone scam in which they received a phone call Sunday, 8:15 p.m. from a person stating they were with the firefighters association and that they were soliciting donation for their organization.
“When I questioned if I could take my donation directly to the fire department administration offices they hung up on me,” the reader states. She then called the number back and got a recorded voice message stating that the number was not in service.
“I found it odd that the fire department would have a fundraiser two days after Christmas and after they had just completed a fundraiser for coats for Carson City school children,” the reader said. “The caller also did not use the full name of the legitimate association.”
Carson City Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Tom Tarulli confirmed that the Professional Firefighters of Nevada do not make telephone solicitations.
The reader said they called the Administration Office of the Carson City Fire Department on Stewart Street Monday and they stated they don’t any fundraisers going on. The reader also called the Attorney General’s Office, who directed her to Washoe County Sheriff’s Office because the prefix was an Incline Village number. Washoe authorities explained that it was a scam.
