Ron Wood Family Resource Center in Carson City will honor John Hurzel for his service to children, families and the community on May 17, 2014 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Governor's Mansion.

John is a long time resident of Carson City and contributes his efforts toward enhancing the lives of many through his culinary talents and selfless generosity. John offers his expertise to youth interested in the culinary arts and has been a supporter of many non-profit organizations with a healthy nutritional focus.

Carson City restaurant, food and health inspections through April 2

Restaurant inspections are made weekly by the Carson City Health and Human Services Environmental Health Division. 
Inspections are through April 2, 2014 and include restaurants, bars and lounges, convenience stores and the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, which scored a AA scores of 100.

Toys for Tots gets holiday delivery of gifts, cash collected by Nevada Department of Public Safety and Capitol Police

With ongoing requests for children's Christmas gifts still being taken, the Toys For Tots program in Carson City was presented with generous gifts of cash and children's toys on behalf of the Capitol Police division of the Nevada Department of Public Safety and the Nevada State Law Enforcement Officers' Association.

Fourth annual 'Cookies with Santa' at Adele's to benefit Ron Wood Family Resource Center

Thanks to big hearts and the spirit of giving, the fourth annual Cookies with Santa, a benefit for Ron Wood Family Resource Center’s holiday fund, takes place Dec. 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Café at Adele’s.

Children of all ages are invited to enjoy hot cider, hot chocolate and cookies, visit with and have their picture taken with Santa, while helping provide Christmas for children in need.

Marines to make final Toys For Tots push this weekend at three Walmart stores

The 2013 Toys For Tots season is in full swing and the Ron Wood Family Resource Center is asking for the public's help. The local Toys For Tots program aims to help more than 7,000 children in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties with gifts this holiday season.

Wine Walk, ice skating with Santa Claus on tap today in downtown Carson City

Ice skating for the kids at Arlington Square Ice Rink across from the Carson Nugget and wine stops in downtown Carson City are on tap today.

The Carson City Downtown Business Association says that even though it's chilly outside, you can keep warm by bundling up, putting on a pair of skates or walking along the streets of downtown, where you can shop for holiday gifts (there's several gift shops and shopping opportunities throughout downtown) and sip some fine wine at any number of stops.

Sheriff: Body of homeless man found in Carson City may have died from the cold

UPDATE: The body of a man found this morning in the hill area behind the AM/PM at 4190 South Carson Street likely died of exposure to the cold weather, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene at around 11:25 a.m. after a caller phoned dispatch saying there was a man behind the store who wasn't moving. Foul play isn't suspected, said Furlong. A coroner and detectives were also investigating.

Library is the Place for Holiday Giving

Carson City Library is an officially designated place in Carson City to drop-off holiday cheer, in the form of giving, to so many of our area residents in need of a little festive spirit and warmth.

Toys for Tots is ready to help community with hotline beginning Dec. 2

The Toys for Tots HOTLINE will be open for families requesting toys for Christmas. The hotline opens December 2nd through December 23rd from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday.

Toys for Tots will be serving children in Carson, Douglas, Storey and Lyon counties. The HOTLINE NUMBER IS 884-TOYS.

Toys for Tots will be kicking off the 2013 campaign with our local Marines at all three Walmart stores on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30.

Carson City Library launches food drive now through Nov. 27

A food drive to benefit the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, sponsored by the Carson City Library, is happening now through Nov. 27. Donate six full-size food items, canned or packaged goods and enter a drawing to win four movie passes to the all-digital Galaxy Theatre.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong announces fourth term run

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong will run for a fourth term as the capital city's top law enforcement officer, announcing his 2014 re-election intentions Tuesday.

In what Furlong described as three "politically quiet but challenging years," crime statistics have trended downward since the 2010 election, which is remarkable given Carson City's economic climate as it continues to deal with the effects of a deep, prolonged recession.

Food and clothing drives on Saturday to benefit Carson City families in need

A food drive that brings federal employees together to collect food for those hungry in Carson City will be held Saturday following a successful event last weekend that netted more than 700 pounds in donations. Also underway Saturday is a clothing drive for families in need at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The “Feds Feed Families” drive will have a booth and food drop-off area at Grocery Outlet, 1831 North Carson Street this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“Feds Feed Families” a food drive to benefit the hungry in our community has kicked off again for the summer. In Carson City, federal employees from USDA Rural Development, the Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Federal Highway Administration, and the U.S. Geological Survey will be volunteering and collecting donated food in front of Grocery Outlet, at 1831 N. Carson, on Aug. 3 and Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. Grocery Outlet owner Dave Cox provides discounts on purchases for food drives.

Carson City Cops and Kids open house lives up to its 'safest party on the street' reputation

With sunny skies, a gentle breeze and plenty of children and their parents, the 10th annual Cops and Kids open house, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Saturday, lived up to its reputation as the safest party on the street.

More than 2,000 attended the four-hour event, which featured games, prizes and demonstrations by Carson City Sheriff's Office patrol officers and personnel. The event is designed for children and their parents to get quality meet-and-greet face time with law enforcement personnel.

Established in 1995, the Carson City-based Ron Wood Family Resource Center is the local resource for services, information and referrals for children and families in our community. It is a 501c3 non-profit agency.

Ron Wood Family Resource Center would like to thank the businesses and community for their generosity during the 2012 holiday season!

Donations to support youth and families that suffer from food insecurity amounted to 79,792 lbs. of food through December 2012.

Ron Wood also serves as the Toys for Tots distribution center for our community. We were able to serve approximately 4100 disadvantaged children in 2012.

Capitol Police, Nevada Department of Public Safety staff deliver Toys for Tots

With requests for children's Christmas gifts soaring over the past three years, the Toys For Tots program in Carson City got a healthy boost courtesy of the Capitol Police division of the Nevada Department of Public Safety.

For the past several weeks Capitol Police officers and Nevada Department DPS staff members have been collecting new unwrapped toys, bicycles and warm clothing in Carson City to assist the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves with its the Toys for Tots collection drive effort.

Carson City authorities launch DUI saturation patrols, checkpoint for Labor Day weekend

The Carson City Sheriff's Office has stepped up its efforts to get intoxicated drivers off the road. Beginning Thursday through Sept. 5, patrol officers will be out in full force as part of a citywide crackdown on drunk driving. Saturation patrols, as they are called, aim to identify, stop and remove drunk and impaired drivers, said Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Darrin Sloan in a news release.

Cafe at Adele's hosts Greenhouse Project benefit Wednesday

An evening to benefit The Greenhouse Project takes place Wednesday, Feb. 22, beginning at 6 p.m. at Café at Adele’s.
The event is limited to 80 attendees. Each will receive a glass of wine and tastings from the three new menus offered by Charlie Abowd, chef and owner of the establishment.
“We’re showcasing selections from the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus,” said Karen Abowd, project president. “This is an opportunity for the community to see the changes we’ve made at Café at Adele’s, to enjoy an evening of fantastic food and support the work of The Greenhouse Project.”

There's a new breakfast in town: Cafe at Adele's

Adele's is a Carson City landmark. This long-time restaurant — located in one of the oldest homes in town — attracts discriminating diners with its classical ambiance and reputation of its renown chef Charlie Abowd.

But now the restaurant is doing something new that will likely shake things up in Carson City early in the morning. They are serving breakfast.
