Semper fidelis is more than just the motto of the United States Marine Corps (USMC). It is a phrase to live by. Every year since 1948, the USMC has faithfully delivered Christmas joy to millions of needy children around the country.
That faithfulness will stand to benefit around 3,000 children this year in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties.

As the holiday season approaches, participants from Carson City Parks and Recreation’s Kids Klub programs were invited to share in the giving spirit.

This past week, children from the Carson City Parks and Recreation joined the Ron Wood Family Resource Center in their yearly non-perishable food drive. Beginning on Monday, Dec. 7, participants in the Kids Klub after school programs begin bringing in their much needed donations in hopes of helping others have a happier holiday season.

With temperatures dropping and snow arriving, a collection drive is underway by a group of community members, businesses and organizations with its mission to collect hats, gloves and scarfs for the homeless living in Carson City.

For a few hours one day each year, children of all ages are offered the opportunity to immerse themselves in the full spirit of the season, when Cafe at Adele’s hosts Cookies with Santa, a benefit event that combines all the best aspects of good cheer with helping to provide gifts for area children.

Carson City residents woke up to at least an inch or more of snow Friday morning, which made for slow going along local roads.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. this morning for the Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley, Virginia City and Dayton areas.

Toys For Tots will be kicking off the 2015 campaign at the local Walmart stores in Carson City on Market Street and Douglas County on Grant Street in Gardnerville this Black Friday and Saturday (November 27th and 28th) for local children. The Marines of the Bridgeport Warfare Training Facility will be on hand once again this year to assist with donations.

The staff of Carson High School and Douglas High School have agreed to a rivalry basketball game to be played Nov. 19 at DHS. The staff basketball game is a fundraiser for the Peace Officer’s Memorial Fund.
Multiple members of each of the school’s staff will be on hand to battle it out on the basketball court and continue the rivalry, but for a good cause. Come support the Senators or the Tigers and be sure to wear your favorite school’s colors.

Carson City locals who believe in taking care of families for a Greater Good pulled through again. Among Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Geological Survey and USDA Rural Development, 1,042 pounds of food was collected for Carson City area nonprofits Ron Wood Family Resource Center and Friends in Service Helping as part of the Can-Struction Challenge.

The Feds Feed Families Food Drive kicked it up a notch this year with the CAN-Town Construction Challenge! US Bureau of Reclamation, US Geological Survey and USDA Rural Development all participated by building CAN-Projects.

Farmers and donors at Carson City's 3rd Street Farmers Market gave more than 400 pounds of fresh produce to the “Feds Feed Families” food drive last weekend for the Ron Wood Family Resource Center food pantry.
Donations will be accepted again Saturday to benefit the pantry at Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH.

The annual “Feds Feed Families” food drive to benefit the hungry in Carson City, will accept food donations through October 2, with a special push for donations and fresh produce on Aug. 1 and 8 at the Third and Curry Street Farmer’s Market in Carson City.

The Friends of the Carson City Library are helping fight hunger in the Carson City community with their “Christmas in July” Food Drive to benefit the Ron Wood Family Resource Center. The food drive began Monday, July 13 and ends today, Saturday, July 25.

Community members can bring a donation of canned or packaged food to the Browsers Book Store at 711 East Washington Street. Browsers is accepting food until 6 p.m. With every donation, you can receive a free Christmas book of your choice and a coupon for $1 off of a purchase in the book store.

The Friends of the Carson City Library are hosting a “Christmas in July” Food Drive to benefit the Ron Wood Family Resource Center. The food drive begins on Monday, July 13 and ends on Saturday, July 25.

Ron Wood Family Resource Center (a 501 c 3 - non-profit agency) is searching for candidates to serve on our Board of Directors.

Ron Wood Family Resource Center established in 1995, is the local resource for services, information and referrals for children and families in our community. We are seeking community-minded individuals that would like to make a difference in our community!

Please join us for our 2015 Community Leader of the Year Ceremony and Benefit honoring our First Lady Kathleen Sandoval for her service and dedication to youth and families in Carson City.

First Lady Sandoval has worked as an advocate of foster youth, children and families in-need in Carson City and Northern Nevada. Ron Wood Family Resource Center will honor the First Lady on May 16 from 2pm – 6pm at the Governor’s Mansion.

Nevada Title and Payday Loan is hosting a food drive for the end of March through April for the entire community. The office will be encouraging comnunity members to stop by and lend a helping hand to those in need by bringing in non-perishable food items to the office.
Community members will receive a raffle ticket to enter a basket drawing. So feel free to stop in and join us in helping the Ron Wood Family Resource Center. We are located at 3151 N. Carson Street, Carson City.

Ron Wood Family Resource Center is looking for volunteers for the emergency food bank. Our Community Essentials Food Bank offers emergency food to our community. Did you know that 25 percent of our residents don't know where their next meal is coming from? Give a few hours per week and make a HUGE difference. One of my dreams in my professional life was to introduce young people to the viability of a great career in horticulture. I have been fortunate to realize that goal through my involvement with The Greenhouse Project. However, awakening the passion for growing and working with plants in youth is only one wonderful aspect of this project. I also get to work with caring dedicated people, help beautify downtown Carson City and, best of all, help feed those in need.

The Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor’s Mansion was held recently in Carson City. Food for Thought, Friends in Service Helping (also known as FISH) and Ron Wood Family Resource Center gathered for the event hosted by Channel 2 News in Reno. Also cab drivers donated through a program they established called Toys for Tips.
In all around 5,156 pounds of food was collected.

'Tis the Season, Carson City! Holiday cheer is in the wind, and we have plenty of wind right now. This weekend is jam-packed with food and toy drives, concerts, and Santa-sightings, so bundle up and have a fun time enjoying our great city.

This Friday, Dec. 12, Save Mart will match donations to Ron Wood Family Resource Center, a local Feeding America-affiliated food bank, through their Holiday "Give. Share. Care" program, for a total dollar-for-dollar matching grant of up to $5,000 for the day.

This initiative could not come at a more critical time for local food banks. Already stretched heading into the holiday season, recent cuts to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps) significantly dented the food budgets of thousands of local, low-income households.

The Instrumental Music Department, Bands and Orchestra, is having its annual Winter Holiday Concert on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Donations are welcome. Meanwhile, Carson High School has had a number of their singing Senators recognized for their vocal talents already this year.

Thanks to big hearts and the spirit of giving, the fifth annual Cookies with Santa, a benefit for Ron Wood Family Resource Center’s holiday fund, takes place Saturday, Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Café at Adele’s.
Children of all ages are invited to enjoy complimentary hot cider, hot chocolate, coffee and cookies, visit with and have their picture taken with Santa, while helping provide Christmas for children in need.

The 2014 Toys For Tots season is in full swing and we need your help. The local Toys For Tots campaign will be helping thousands of children in Carson, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties with toys this holiday season.

Marines from the Bridgeport Warfare Center will be at all three Walmart stores in the Carson City and Douglas County area on Friday and Saturday accepting donations. Come out and support our local children. Every child deserves a Happy Holiday.

Ron Wood Family Resource Center is kicking off their Food Day Food Drive to offer emergency assistance to the children and families in Carson City. We are looking for youth groups, community groups and businesses that will collect food for Ron Wood to distribute to families in need.

National Food Day starts on Oct. 24.

The Sierra Nevada Chapter of ARMA International in partnership with Iron Mountain and Office Depot will host a free paper shredding event in the Office Depot parking located on the northeast corner of Fairview Drive and South Carson Street, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Everyone from the greater Carson City area and beyond is welcome to participate.

Free Books for Canned Food! The Friends of the Library are having a canned food drive to support the Ron Wood Family Resource Center. Bring in a donation of canned or packaged food from Sept. 8 through Sept. 13 and pick out a free book of your choice.

One free book per donation. Especially needed now are staples such as canned tuna, beans, vegetables, fruit, pastas and sauces. Bring your donations to The Browsers Corner Book Store at 711 East Washington Street. Open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

HotSpot Yoga Studio and Fitness Defined will celebrate their grand opening Saturday, Sept. 6 with ample, healthy activities planned, and a food drive for the Ron Wood Family Resource Center.

Festivities will run from 4 p.m to 8 p.m., with raffle drawings at 6 p.m. Free yoga classes will be held at 8 and 9:30 a.m., 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., to introduce this fantastic new health opportunity right here in Carson City. HotSpot Yoga is located inside Fitness Defined Personal Training, 195 E Winnie Lane, Carson City.

“Feds Feed Families” a food drive to benefit the hungry in Carson City, will be accepting donations and cleaned produce at the Aug. 9 and again Aug. 16 at the Third and Curry Street Farmer’s Market in Carson City.

Donations will benefit the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, a local food pantry that provides emergency rations for about 425 families each week.

Pam Winebarger, the food bank and volunteer coordinator, said the need in the community is great.

“We are seeing many more families in need, and seniors too, which is sad,” she said.
