Column: An Immigrant's Dream

I am married to an immigrant. Among the many definitions that people apply to this word is "a person who comes into a new country".

United States Sen. Dean Heller and U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei were the featured guest speakers at Wednesday's monthly Soup's On luncheon series sponsored by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

Column: How Did All of This Happen? Part 2 (sponsored)

As I now conclude this particular article, it is just hours away from one of America's most revered events--if not the most. President-elect Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States on the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building at 12:00 noon on January 20, and Mike Pence will be duly sworn in as the Vice-President of the United States.

Text of Nevada Governor Sandoval State of State 2017 speech

Here is the 2017 State of the State presented by Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval.

As I write this article, the Electoral College is deciding the route of the American Presidency and of Donald Trump as President-Elect. The Russian ambassador has been shot and killed in Turkey by a fanatic. Another European terrorist attack has taken place in Berlin, Germany, killing at least 12 people and wounding dozens of others during the Christmas shopping season. Back in Aleppo, Syria, the Assad government is finishing off the horrific killings of its own people as well as rescue helpers and hundreds of Christians — many of whom are women and children.

Column: Looking Back At A Special Thanksgiving Moment (sponsored)

Thanksgiving isn't a patriotic holiday per se, but it is full of patriotic feelings as Americans did and should give thanks for our shared blessings as a nation.

Column: Question 2 not all it’s cooked up to be

To legalize or not to legalize, that is the question we must answer on Nov. 8.

Or, is it?

I’ve taken my time this year to deliberate over the matter of recreational marijuana legalization — in spite of my general instinctive opposition to mind-altering substances — consulting with area experts on drugs and drug policy.

Following hours of interviews, reading and research, my conclusion is that there is something more sinister at stake here over Question 2 than simply the legalization of an illicit drug.

Welcome to Sheldonville

I wandered over to Firkin and Fox on Sunday morning expecting the back bar to be a quiet place where I could watch some football.

Tea Parties Were a Reaction to Bipartisan Cronyism

Event Date:
August 10, 2016 - 9:30am

In our last column, we explained that the financial collapse of 2007-08 was due much to collusion between private banks and government. Congressional mandates required lenders to issue mortgages to people who couldn’t afford them. Then, government agencies would purchase the faulty loans from the banks, thus relieving the banks of the risks.

A Potentially Potent Running Mate (sponsored)

As most of my readers know when it comes to politics I am a registered Independent. Most other Independents that I spend time around are individual thinkers who appreciate space and time to make up their minds before voting They are not party hardliners as are many Democrats and Republicans. Most Independents that I actually have met several times and waded into great exchanges of political conversation with struck me as voters who are very careful giving their vote to anyone.

Thoughts on the Republican National Convention

Nearly everyone, it seems, has been focused lately on Donald Trump’s nomination by the Republicans and now the chaos of the Democrat convention. We want to celebrate some other important aspects of the GOP convention (where Ron was a delegate) as reflected in speeches by Paul Ryan, Scott Walker and Mike Pence.

Voters Didn’t Get Fooled Again – and They Won’t Next Time, Either

Nevada Republican voters spoke loudly last night. Again.

They spoke loudly in November 2014, voting down a proposed gross receipts tax (GRT) 4-to-1 and sweeping Republicans into control of Nevada’s executive and legislative branches for the first time in generations.

That was a mandate to hold the line on taxes, reform collective bargaining, stop the bleeding in the Public Employees Retirement System, improve schools through choice and other reforms, and especially to oppose the kind of tax 79 percent of voters rejected.

Others saw things differently.

Don't vote for these people: An unusual voter guide

A news release came out Tuesday afternoon giving voters a guide to who the small-minded, intolerant, no-solution political arsonists are that Republicans should oppose in the primary.
The release didn't say that explicitly, but the language is very clear: These are people with no business in pu ...

Opinions Challenged

Elected officials, lobbyists, political candidates, activists, and media pundits - the political class - far too often project little more than self-interest-based opinion. The balance of so many lay people's opinions are too often just that - opinion - uninformed, but strongly held. Now is the time for Isaac Asimov's observation: Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them every once in a while, or the light won't come in."

Democrats double Republicans in voter reg last month, ominous sign for GOP

I have said and written many times that registration is not destiny. But those numbers mean something -- and 2016 is starting to look like 2012 and 2008 in Nevada, presidential years in which the Democrats did very well.
