Sandoval tip to Kasich: How to say Nevada

Carson City Republican Assembly Votes For The New Tax

I know much has been written about the passage of SB483 by the Assembly, especially about how many Republicans voted in favor of the Budget Bill, despite their campaign promises to not support a Gross Receipts Tax.

Our freshman District 40 Assemblyman, P.K. O’Neil, announced his support of SB483 prior to voting, including this statement: “I believed our state employees are hard-working Nevadans who had been asked to sacrifice in a disproportionate way since the beginning to the budget crisis and economic downturn.”

Fortunately, This Could Never Happen in Nevada

Recently, my friend Slats Grobnik told me about politics in a state where he had lived.

“We had a Republican governor who won his first term by promising things limited-government conservatives wanted, especially no new or increased taxes. In that term he abandoned all those promises and took up with the Dems and RINOs – that’s Republicans in Name Only.

Eight Assembly Republicans receive notification of their voices on wiretaps

What's A "Republican"?

The shameless behavior of the "Republicans" in the recently concluded 78th session of the Nevada Legislature -- their vote for the biggest tax and budget hike in the State's history being first and foremost among their record of mis- and nonfeasance -- and the angry reaction to it by the State Party and the loyal Republican rank-and-file, raise an important question.

What is a Republican? What does it mean to be a Republican? If the RINOs and conservatives are both "Republicans," then the term badly needs to be defined.

The 78th Session — An Autopsy

The elections in November 2014 were a great surprise to many and shock to some. The people swept all Democrats out of the state-wide offices, reversed the majorities in both houses of the Legislature, and by a 4-to-1 margin defeated the "margin" tax. We the Republican base were looking forward to restoring long-overdue sanity at the State level.

Pat Hickey, Political Pundit

"Republicans own the education issue in Nevada right now. Let's cash in on that ownership!"
-Pat Hickey on Ralston Live, June 3, 2015

Pat Hickey always begins his blog entries with a quote that resonates with the theme, and I've learned from the master. I've become one of Pat's fans, both because he talks more like a human being than a politician (e.g. calling KOH's Dan Mason's Show "right wing" before pretending to correct himself), and because he has an extremely wry sense of humor.

Nevada Legislature: Lobbyists, interest groups grade the session

It was a brave new world when Republicans swept all constitutional offices and both houses of the Legislature in November for the first time in more than a century. Nobody knew what an era of conservative control woul...

Nevada Legislature: Who’s the RINO now?

The 2015 session of the Nevada Legislature has ended, and it produced enough drama and comedy to keep us political junkies fully entertained for 120 glorious days.

But the comedy continues as the lunatic fringe of the Republican Party are busy casting aspersions against the very popular Gov. Brian Sandoval and the majority of the Republicans in the Legislature who approved a $1.1 billion tax increase. The favorite friendly-fire insult of the far right is to call them RINOs, short for Republican In Name Only.

Sunday, Assemblyman Erv Nelson and others broke their key election promises to fight huge destructive tax hikes and make state government operate reasonably. Nelson used glittering generalities and platitudes to explain that he didn’t really understand matters very well back when he made his promises, even though he’s an experienced lawyer. But now he understands and so has changed his mind.

If he thinks he now understands matters correctly, then he must logically also believe that folks who voted for him based on his promises don’t understand.

Our Congress is broken. It's dysfunctional. It's confused. It's Illogical. I know. "It is all the other Senators and Congressmen and women's fault, not mine." WRONG!
