Democrats have hit a new low. Beyond Antifa. Beyond plain socialism. Beyond the Clinton lies and corruption. Beyond any reason and decency.

They dug up and then hid an accusation that Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh was involved in sexual misconduct when he was in high school.

Not a series of continuing transgressions. Not an incident ten years ago, or from law school, or from his undergraduate college days. But in high school.

We guess they couldn’t find the girl with whom Kavanaugh played “post office” in kindergarten.

Recently, we explained why U.S. Appeals Court Judge Brett Kavanaugh is probably the best person President Donald Trump could have picked for the upcoming Supreme Court opening.

We noted his outstanding record as a lawyer and appellate judge and reviewed his glowing recommendations from legal scholars and colleagues. He’s a good and decent man with outstanding credentials and judicial temperament.

A wildlife bill supported by the Nevada Department of Wildlife is now before both houses of Congress. The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act recommends crucial funding for conservation of those fish and wildlife species in greatest need across the country.

With a thoughtful and succinct speech Monday, President Donald Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to succeed retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. With the most experience of the people Trump considered and a stellar textualist and originalist record, he was considered by many as the front runner for the nomination.

Edwin Lyngar, a freelance writer, penned a “From the Left” piece this week in the Reno paper under the headline, “Trump’s tax policy is an attack on the community”. He hit the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), President Trump and all Republicans and limited government conservatives.

We say “hit” because it was the usual leftwing label-and-bash fest, long on nasty rhetoric and not only devoid of evidence, but in fact contrary to well known facts and data.

His opening sentence calls the TCJA, “terrible … and a massive redistribution of wealth to the already super-rich.”

John Calvin Coolidge Jr., our 30th President, 1923-1929, was perhaps America’s most under-rated chief executive. He was a man of few words, decisive action and a dry sense of humor.

“Silent Cal” was born on the Fourth of July in 1872 in Vermont, the son of a prominent local farmer, general store owner, postmaster and politician. He was the only president born on Independence Day, although three former presidents died on the Fourth.

When Ron was in law school, on the first day of his class on income tax law, the professor was singing praises of income taxes and got carried away. The prof, an expert who had written the book on the subject, said that income tax law is good law because it’s not an all-or-nothing thing like much of civil or criminal law. Instead, it’s proportional.

That’s true, of course, although not quite the high virtue he seemed to suggest. Anyway, when he said the income tax was perhaps one of mankind’s great inventions, Ron objected.

Nevada politicians across the political spectrum raised concerns Monday about a Department of Interior budget request that, if implemented by Congress, could affect how the federal public land agency operates and funds conservation projects.

As Oprah ponders a run for the Presidency as a Democrat, she might pause and reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today honoring a great Republican. Dr. King chose to be a registered Republican because he knew, as does anyone who knows civil rights history, that the Democrats were the party of; slavery, the KKK, Jim Crow, and builders of Confederate war memorial monuments honoring slave owners.

Congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump have passed a landmark tax reduction and reform bill. Democrats, mainstream media and other leftists are spreading misinformation about the effects.

Let’s set the record straight.

First, “The new law is larded with provisions custom-made for the rich and superrich while offering mere crumbs for the middle class.” This version of a lie told by many comes from Democrat Alan Blinder, who also said, “it may be the most regressive” tax cut ever.

Christmas is just around the corner. For small businesses, it is officially the start of the make-or-break holiday shopping season. And this year, passing a tax bill would give small business owners much to be thankful for.

Lawmakers are running low on time to pass a new 25 percent tax rate for small businesses—the largest tax cut in generations, as President Trump often says.

As a small business owner and lawmaker at the state level, my message to Washington is simple: Get the job done. Small business deserves it, voters want it, and the economy needs it.

Republicans in congress have introduced their tax bills, and they and the president intend to pass some version of tax reform promptly. As they try to craft a package that will pass, let’s recall themain principles, goals and problems facing tax reform.

The key goal is always economic growth. Growing the economy at a sustainably fast clip means on average everyone is better off and each person or family has more opportunity to improve their lot. It also allows us to afford more of the public goods that government can supply, including caring for the needy.

Will Congress change the tax laws? When will they send the proposed changes to the President? Will he sign it and have the laws changed? I don’t know, but perhaps you should not ‘hold your breath’ waiting for it to happen. Of course the tax laws are too complicated and it is too expensive to prepare the returns.

Two recent news stories caught our attention, and they suggest some good news, but ...

First, the estimated growth rate of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) – that is, the annual rate of growth for America’s economy – was revised upward to 3.1 percent for the second quarter of 2017.

Second, the Trump Administration has eliminated 16 regulations for every regulation it has implemented.

A last-ditch effort to substantially overhaul the Affordable Care Act backed by Nevada Sen. Dean Heller is finally coming to the light with just weeks before a procedural deadline.

In our last column, we discussed the Civil Rights movement that hugely changed America in the 20th Century and greatly redeemed the failure of our Founding (allowing slavery) and the Democrat and KKK legacy of bigotry, oppression and discrimination known as Jim Crow.

We pointed out that government, plus the social, economic and political Establishment, was the enforcer of slavery and Jim Crow. And that the reforms overshot their mark, leading to pernicious reverse discrimination that now travels under the euphemism of diversity.

Arizona’s United States Senator John McCain has been a difficult Republican for libertarian limited-government conservatives like us to embrace. Often, we stand opposite him on important issues of the day. He is too lacking in overarching principle for our taste. James has called on him to retire and actually sided with his Republican primary opponents in 2010 and 2016.
Yet, today we are sad.

The third annual Morning in Nevada PAC Basque Fry at Corley Ranch in Gardnerville will be headlined this year by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt announced Friday.

Despite what so many Americans demand of lawmakers today, our country wasn't built so much on cooperation as it was people with differences learning to get along.

For now, this is the last regular column that will carry the Ron and Geoff byline. Geoff is leaving the Assistant Controller’s job July 1 for a new one.

The Georgia-6 special election turned out to be a media headfake. Karen Handel, the former Republican Secretary of State with universal name recognition in a deep red district, eeked out a 3.2-point victory over Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old Democrat with no experience in elective office and no prior name recognition, and who didn't even live in the district. This narrow victory was described as a "Democratic defeat," which is a little much considering that Georgia-6 has been Republican since the 1970's.

On May the 4th, the House of Representatives passed their version of health care reform (H.R. 1628) without a single hearing or any input from the Democratic minority. The vote was 217 to 213. All 193 Democrats voted no, as did 20 Republicans:

During the fall of 1983, my friend - a journalist, columnist, editor, hurmorist, speechwriter and political strategist - Chris Schaller introduced me to a man, he cited, as the smartest politician ever. Tom Fettic. And Christy, as you know, had previously worked with some of Nevada's very best.

Upon Christy's untimely death, in Februrary 1984, Tom was "politically bequeathed" to me for his '84 election to the Carson City Board of Supervisors, his '88 re-election, as well as his '94 election to the Nevada Legislature as our State Assemblyman.

For six years, most Republicans campaigning for federal office pledged to repeal ObamaCare. According to national polls, a majority of Americans have consistently opposed ObamaCare even when they otherwise approved of Barack Obama as president.
