If you could rename the seasons in Northern Nevada, it might go something like this. Ski Season, Construction Season, Burning Man, and Nevada Day. Burning Man season is here! Soon you will start seeing art cars, buses, RVs, bike racks galore, and those people who call themselves Burners.

This week, I got into a rousing text conversation about feeling imprisoned. We spoke about obligations, duty, and ultimately — the choices that led up to those imprisonments. Prison isn’t just a place for criminals to go to pay their retribution to society. We can create prisons for ourselves and not even know it.

A festive gathering that celebrates music-themed films arrives in Carson City beginning Tuesday, delivering top-notch features about music and musicians, styles, songwriting and music video making.

The Jukebox International Film Festival is the place music and flicks collide, bringing enthusiasts and artists together from across the country to the capital city for three days, offering free showings, meet-and-greets and more.

One of the things I used to do at University of Nevada Cooperative Extension was diagnosing plant problems. When people brought in samples, I, other Extension staff and volunteers would examine them to see what the problem was and what might be causing it.

Heading into Thursday, August 15, 2019 we can expect hot weather to continue with high temperatures near 100. Among events for the day, there will be a wreath remembrance ceremony for fallen Carson City law enforcement officers at the sheriff's office, a Muscle Powered morning hike, art showings, and a meeting of the Status of Women in Nevada group at the Carson Nugget. As part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival, there will be an outdoor "Woodstock Remembered" concert at Comma Coffee and a music presentation, "All About that Bass" by Scot Marshall and Friends at the Nevada State Museum.

Have you ever felt like projects, circumstances, the world was just piling on top of you like rocks? One rock is easy. You can catch it as it falls from the heavens and deal with it: setting it to the side, jackhammering it up into little pieces, or giving the rock to someone else.

Heading into the midweek, Wednesday, August 14, 2019 activities abound around the capital city. There's a new group for writers that meets at the Brewery Arts Center; a salary negotiation workshop at WNC, a chautauqua and author presentations at Dangberg Historic Park. There's also the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival that will feature the Wesley Orsolic Trio during Wheeled Food Wednesday at the BAC, with jams to continue at Living the Good Life; there's also a real estate workshop for veterans, art showings, salsa dancing and more. Heading into Tuesday, August 13, there's a galaxy of events lined up, beginning at midnight with a meteor shower watch party at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory. When the sun arrives there's fitness events, a book talk at the Nevada State Library and Archives, outdoor Carson City jazz festival happenings at Comma Coffee and Bob McFadden Plaza, family movie night at the library and more. Heading into the first day of the work week, if you're an early, early riser or are settling in for the night, you'll want to step outside at around 3 a.m. for the peak of the Perseid shower, which will be in the eastern sky. If you missed them, there will be a viewing party hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at WNC beginning at midnight Tuesday morning, August 13. Otherwise, it's onward and upward into the day with a Cooperative Extension presentation, Shred Kids mountain bike camp, Red Cross sitter certification class, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Carson City’s Montessori has been educating a portion of the capitol city’s children for over a decade. They quickly outgrew their space, and have been looking to relocate for about 13 years.

Now, an end may be in sight. According to Carson Montessori Executive Director Jessica Daniels, the school has been looking at the vacant Silver State Charter School complex on Fairview since Silver State shut its doors. After funding fell out more than once, they’re at it again, and a tentative offer of over one million dollars has been offered for the space.

This week, I am traveling to see my family in Texas. Whenever I go back to my roots, I’m always reminded of the deep seedlings that exist here for me. These seedlings are connections made during my formative years, all the way back to kindergarten.

CARSON CITY — As schoolchildren across the region prepare to go back to school, the Nevada Department of Transportation is providing tips to safely bicycle and walk to school.

Tragically, there were approximately 80 pedestrian fatalities and eight bicyclist fatalities on Nevada roads last year. We hope all drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists will share the road to help our communities safely travel back to school.

Today, as I was doing a yoga class at Carson City Yoga, my thoughts drifted to the concept of “home.” There are dozens of clichés about home. Home is where the heart is. Home is where you make it. But how does one actively create a home?

The Carson City Health Department's inspections this week returned with eight Carson City businesses in violation of health and safety codes. Scores of 0 with no violations translate to full compliance with health department food safety codes.

As we were leaving Casino Fandango, after watching “The Lion King,” my friend Cathy turns to me and says, “you should write your column about what happens when people get power hungry.” I laughed because I was already thinking about what she was suggesting. I have been described as fiercely independent. For years, I have forged my own path — proudly so. I’d tap by feet along to anthems for independent women and cheer myself on. My independence became a badge of honor. And why shouldn’t it be? It was hard one. In some ways, I had to battle for it. But being solo also had a side effect, I struggled in asking for help. “I can do it” became a mantra for me. When I had a short fall, I would hide it instead of asking for support. In business, you see it happening as siloing.

Reno-Tahoe International Airport expects an average of 15,000 passengers to arrive and depart daily, Wednesday through Sunday during the July 4 holiday peak period, a 12 percent year-over-year increase as officials say air service is "on the rise" at the airport.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Waters Supplies Association (TWSA) are in the process of distributing an initial run of 250 cigarette butt collection canisters at key locations around Lake Tahoe. The aim of the Tahoe Cigarette Disposal Program is to reduce toxic chemicals from littered cigarette butts from leaching into the environment, to protect wildlife, and to reduce litter on Lake Tahoe’s shoreline and vicinity.

Once I heard someone say, “expectations are pre-meditated resentments.” I used to LOVE that statement. I proceeded to throw my expectations out the window and delight in what I got. Unfortunately, what I got was all over the place. It was unfocused. It was sometimes unacceptable.
