What Works: Work at your relationships, but don't torture yourself

I was scrolling around on Facebook today and ran into a post. “Once you are in a relationship, you think it’s going to last forever. In reality, it only lasts as long as you are both working for it. If one of you stops working, it falls apart.” Lots of comments in agreement were posted. There were lots of likes and loves. My viewpoint is slightly different.

What Works: How do Ask for Help

If there is one lesson that 2019 has taught me, it’s that I can’t do it alone. I can’t generate business alone. I can’t work myself through that tough day alone. I can’t do my life alone. Life and business require support. Yet, so many people are afraid to ask for help. They see it as a burden that they have a need. Or, like me, they are just too stubborn to reach out for fear of looking weak or incapable.

Carson City Sheriff's Office urges safeguards against theft, 'porch pirates' during holidays

With the holiday season here the Carson City Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the community of some precautions that will reduce the chances of becoming a victim of crime. While many of us are shopping for the best deal on Christmas presents, criminals are looking for an opportunity to take advantage of us while we are distracted. Many of the tips provided involve common sense and can be practiced year round.

Carson City area weather: Snow ahead, motorists urged to get early Thanksgiving travel start

The first significant snow-driven storms of the season remain on track to impact western Nevada and Sierra midday Tuesday through Wednesday, coinciding with one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Motorists are advised that if they can do it, they should finish travel over the Sierra by Tuesday morning to avoid long delays and highway travel headaches.

What Works: Attract Abundance Through Gratitude

This past Sunday, I was asked to speak briefly at Unity of the Sierra about a free gratitude group I run on Facebook. Anyone can request to join by going here. Gratitude is a practice many become just a little more aware of in November. After all, it’s the month of Thanksgiving. However, did you know that gratitude is scientifically proven to create joy and abundance?

What Works: Hack your way to success

I guess you could say I joined the growth and development industry because I had a distain for the growth and development industry. I got REALLY tired of their cookie cutter processes and solutions. I got even more tired of the monthly subscription fees or the program ticket prices of those one size fits some tactics. When I opened What Works (it was Coaching at the time), I pledged to do what was right for my clients, not just what worked for my wallet.

Northern Nevada is tinder dry: Is your home firesafe?

In 2003, I wrote an article on making a home firesafe. I started with this “The raging fires in California are a terrible reminder of the wildfire risk of living in the urban-wildland interface.” Now, 16 years later, that initial sentence bears repeating. With climate change, global warming we are seeing hotter, more intense, faster spreading wildfires than ever before. Fuels such as brush, grasses and trees are tinder dry everywhere, including Northern Nevada.

Women’s Health Seminar offered Saturday, Nov. 9

Pelvic Floor Health, Women’s Health, Pre and Postnatal Health
Event Date:
November 9, 2019 - 11:30am

This seminar is for women of all ages, for those who are pregnant, recently had children or had children 40 years ago. We will be discussing pelvic floor dysfunctions which can be a variety of different things.

We will also learn how to control them and start to heal our bodies. We are often told dysfunctions like leaking urine or things that just don’t feel right postpartum are normal and happen to every woman postpartum. We are then never offered solutions beyond kegels.

These dysfunctions are common but should never be perceived as normal. The pelvic floor is comprised of three layers of muscles and these are the muscles responsible for control over proper pelvic floor function, usually postpartum they just need to be retrained how to work, they are rarely damaged and unable to function properly again.

What Works: Happy Halloween, What Masks Do You Wear?

They say the veil is thinnest between the spirit world and ours on Halloween. But today, I’d like to challenge you to examine another veil, the veil between what your mask communicates and who you are. Yes, today we are talking about authenticity. And for many leaders, this can be a scary topic (boo). But as the leader of yourself, or of a company, you owe it to yourself to ask this question. Am I in alignment with the mask I show to the world?

What Works: Loss? It’s Time to Shift!

know it’s weird. But every Fall, I don’t rush for the pumpkin spice lattes and the sweaters. It takes me awhile to embrace what some would call their favorite season. It usually takes until about now, a few days before Nevada Day, to notice that the loss of my beloved summer is turning into something new — the holiday season.

Carson City drug roundup collects 273 pounds of pills, 114 pounds of needles

What Works: Outcome – Let Go of It

I come from a very outcome driven profession, marketing communications. Every action is measured. ROI (return on investment), CPM (cost per thousand), everything is counted to make sure campaigns are effective. Outcomes are everything. Imagine how hard it was to transition into a much more human side of communications.

Pine Nuts with McAvoy Layne: Kentucky Derby and The Calaveras Frog Jump

Took a tour of Churchill Downs in Kentucky yesterday and got to see everything but the race. One nice thing about being a Mark Twain impressionist in the 21st century is the possibility that strangers will walk up to you and start talking to you as though they've known you all their lives.

What Works: Trust, consistency and communication

I was in yoga class this morning and the key idea was trust. As I moved and stretched, I remembered to trust my body and trust myself to go only as far as I could go. As a communication consultant, I start thinking about this as it relates to leadership. Trust, consistency, and communication all play a major role in relationships. And the relationships you spend the most time in are the ones at work. How can you improve these three key components of satisfaction within your organization?

JoAnne Skelly column: The importance of fall cleanup

Good yard sanitation in the fall is as important to year-long plant health as proper planting, watering, fertilizing and pruning are. This is particularly true for next year’s crop of vegetables and fruit. Remove or cut back all the plants in the vegetable garden that are done for the season.

What Works: We are all terrified

What was your reaction to that headline? Was it a silent nodding of the head? Did you bristle — “not me!” Did you analyze? “All of us — really, Diane.” Did you get angry? “What is this clickbait?” No matter your reaction, there are a few universal truths we all deal with differently. Fear is real. Fear manifests in different ways. Fear shows up in all of us at one time or another. Terror is when fear stops us from doing what we want to do.

What Works: Customer Service and Success: Find Ways to Say Yes

Hello Carson City! I’ve been a little out of pocket since Burning Man. I have three sicknesses just pile on: playa lung, a head cold, and I wrapped the whole thing up with bronchitis. Doing life sick was pretty hard. But I found it was made possible by the number of times businesses in this area stepped up and said yes.

Carson City sober-living facility closes, declares bankruptcy after client's death: Part II

On July 25, Joe Tummarello, a long-term client with Carson City-based sober-living facility Lyfe Recovery, passed away at Carson Tahoe Hospital. By all accounts, a month before his death he had been in fine health for a man of 76. He dealt with COPD and needed an oxygen tank to breathe in the high altitude of northern Nevada, but a check-up with his doctors during May of 2019 showed he was nowhere near the brink of death.

However, after being relocated to Carson City from Lyfe Recovery’s Reno facility, Joe’s medication was withheld and he was denied medical intervention after a rapid deterioration of his health, which ultimately, it is alleged, led to his death.
