Carson City School District announces Safe Routes to School parent survey winners

CARSON CITY — Congratulations to Yahir Herrera, third grader from Mark Twain Elementary School, and Adria Bass, a kindergartner from Bordewich Bray Elementary School. Both were awarded prizes for their parents’ participation in a survey designed to develop a School Safety Review Study.

Christmas Through the Years, live music, comedy and more: Carson City region readies for busy weekend

Heading into the weekend, post-Christmas holiday activities continue around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Christmas Through the Years presentation at the Carson Valley Community Theater, Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop, musicians Lauren Kepler and Dan Cypher at Bella Vita Bistro, laughs at the Carson Comedy Club and much more!

Heading into Monday, it sure does feel like Christmas around the capital City. With only two shopping days left until Christmas be sure stop by the Carson Mall for the final days of its Holiday Craft Show. Weather wise we're looking at some valley snow showers into the afternoon and evening. Activities include a spirited discussion by local historian CW Bayer about the origins of Reno's tawdry reputation, plus Carson Cigar Company will hold its annual Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. What Works: Work at your relationships, but don't torture yourself

I was scrolling around on Facebook today and ran into a post. “Once you are in a relationship, you think it’s going to last forever. In reality, it only lasts as long as you are both working for it. If one of you stops working, it falls apart.” Lots of comments in agreement were posted. There were lots of likes and loves. My viewpoint is slightly different.

Carson City's Lighthouse Bar to host 'Pink Party' to benefit Carson Tahoe Cancer Center

This Saturday, Dec. 21, the Lighthouse Bar in Carson City is hosting a “Pink Party” charity event with money to be donated to the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center.

Carson City students have a ball with Vegas Golden Knights to encourage hockey in schools

P.E. Teachers and students celebrated when more than 50 hockey sticks, balls and reversible training jerseys as well as nets, goals and shooter tutors were donated to both Carson Middle School and Bordewich Bray Elementary School today.

The Vegas Golden Knights offered the equipment and materials during the hockey clinics.

Senator Square: Carson City Schools Orchestra students prepare for Holiday Concert

The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Just the idea of a concert in Carson City is exciting enough, but it gets even better because this musical event will cost audiences absolutely nothing except a little time and effort getting there. Admission is free.

Nevada's Vegas Golden Knights to visit Carson City Schools for Hockey Clinics

Nevada's own Vegas Golden Knights will be hosting Hockey Clinics at Schools in Carson City on Friday, Dec. 13, and a Watch Party is scheduled at the Governor’s Mansion to see the Knights Play the Dallas Stars.

Cancer Recovery: Friends of Willow Bill host fundraiser Sunday at Carson City's A to Zen

Observant travelers in Northern Nevada are reporting numerous reindeer sightings along the 85 mile stretch of US 395 between Bordertown, on the north, and Lake Topaz, on the south.

The Willow Reindeer herd now has 3,000 individually crafted works of art. Each reindeer has been signed by the local elementary students that have created it over the past 22 years. With an average of 20 students per class, there have been over 60,000 local children involved in the massive local art project.

Senator Square: Comprehensive Life Skills students make fundraising candles

Everyone has a disability of some kind, but most learn how to cope with or overcome it; however, not everyone with a disability is aware enough to recognize whether or not they even have a physical challenge. These individuals have a severe and profound physical and neurological disability, cannot care for themselves, need full-time assistance, and are some of the kindest human beings in the world, many of whom are students in the Carson City School District and at CHS. Each year, students in the CHS Comprehensive Life Skills program make crafts to sell at the annual CHS Craft Fair and give as gifts.

Telegraph Square unveils new Plaza Sign, highlighting local downtown businesses of Carson City

The new Telegraph Plaza Sign was unveiled Saturday during Small Business Saturday celebrations with free pizza and a raffle, the prizes of which were generously donated by local businesses.

The raffle will continue through 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, and each ticket is a dollar. Get down to Telegraph Square soon to enter!

Senator Square: CHS staff library lounge kickoff, American Citizen essay winners announced

The American Citizen Essay winners are in, and they all have one thing in common: cash prizes. This year, the Carson City School District Board of Trustees selected the topic, “An early motto of the United States was e pluribus unum, which means ‘out of many, one,’ so how do we embrace diversity and inclusiveness to come together as one country?”

Fundraiser tonight in Dayton, Saturday in Carson City for young girl battling brain tumor

Tonight, (Wednesday night) in Dayton, the Sutro Elementary School Boosters Club will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for a student, Maliya Gafford, who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. A fundraiser is also planned for this Saturday in Carson City.

The dinner tonight is from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Sutro Elementary School multipurpose room, 190 Dayton Village Pkwy, Dayton.

The cost is $5. There will be a raffle, silent auction and a bake sale. Boosters will have a donation box in the office if you are unable to attend but would like to help.

Eco-friendly fashion statements abound in Nevada and in the capital city as the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Program announced the winners Tuesday of the 2019 Wearable Recyclables art contest.

Everyone in Carson City is invited, always invited, to come on out and support the CHS athletic teams and programs, especially when so many of these individuals and teams have been so successful. Carson City's Do Drop In fundraiser this Friday at Governor's Mansion

The Do Drop In at 1895 E. Long Street in Carson City is home to the Rural Center for Independent Living and the area's only day center for the homeless and mentally ill. It receives no government subsidies, so it relies exclusively upon community support for the funds needed to keep its lights on and doors open.

Carson City area artist 'Willow Bill' Stage 4 cancer fundraiser to be at A to Zen

Senator Square: Student reflects on Carson High School girls golf season

Editor’s Note: Sarah Wiggins is a CHS sophomore, athlete, NHS member, Leadership member, Blue Crew member, and HOSA Future Health Professional member.

The 2019 season for CHS girls golf was a great experience for everyone on the team. This year, the team was comprised of five girls: Karen Beglin, Sophia Taggart, Karrina Ferris, Brooke Gudmundson, myself, and our coaches, Wade Greenlee and Jack Butler.
