It’s finally here, the last weekend of 2017. It’s fairly quiet around town, until Sunday night, that is. Today, Muscle Powered is leading a five-mile half-day hike along Prison Hill. Take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather, and join them. The Carson Nugget is hosting three nights of comedy this weekend: catch Myles Weber on the stage tonight. Head’s up. Galaxy Theater usually plays a movie from the past on Sundays and Wednesdays. This week, we get treated to the Christmas Classic, Die Hard. You won’t want to miss that.

SATURDAY:

Carson City-native Grant Davis, 21, trained in acting and singing at Reno’s Take 2 Performers Studio for six years, and this Thursday, December 28, the actor returns to the school's Reno campus for a free public screening of his first feature-film starring role.

Sierra Lutheran High School, along with Carson High School and Douglas High School’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes, were fortunate this past week to receive a visit from Flora Savai, a young lady who grew up in the Mathare slums of Nairobi, Kenya.

Carson City locals that frequent the downtown area may have noticed some silence on the hour instead of the bell chimes familiar ring at the Laxalt Building this past summer. The original Carillon — an electronic device that simulates tuned bell chimes — broke down after ringing on the hour since 1999.

Muscle Powered, Citizens for a Walkable and Bikeable Carson City, recently received a $2000 grant from Nevada Department of Transportation Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board to facilitate a video competition to create public service announcements about the dangers of texting and driving.

Santa comes in all shapes, sizes, and apparently, vehicles. Hop aboard the Santa Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum. It’s an out-of-this-world Alien Santa at the annual Zen Christmas at A to Zen. A cookie-loving Santa can be found at Adele’s during their annual toy drive for the Ron Wood Resource Center. If your ‘kids’ are the four-legged kind, then head over to PetSmart or Paws to Pur-fection Dog Grooming for your holiday photos. In addition to the Santa-mania, you’ll find a downtown Carson Beer Crawl, two plays at the Brewery Arts Center, and plenty of music.

Jasmine Wong-Fortunato, Gabriel Covington, and Sy’Johnniqa Moore were awarded the second annual Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships by the Carson City Symphony Association this month.

The spirit of Christmas comes to life as the 17-piece Reno Jazz Orchestra and the Pat Esters Gospel Choir blends Christmas favorites, jazz, and soul - with a few surprises mixed in – for three performances of feel good, ‘get ready for the holidays’ music and song. The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra will perform as well.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club members will celebrate the holidays at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, December 20 with local entertainer, Hallie Kirk.

We’ve got one heck of a weekend on its way, and it’s starting right now. Start off with a trip to the Governor’s Mansion with something non-perishable for the annual Share Your Christmas Food Drive: you won’t even have to leave the warmth of your vehicle. Break a leg to Wild Horse Children’s Theater and to the Proscenium Players. Both troupes begin the run of their winter plays tonight at the Brewery Arts Center. It’s a Christmas Shopping Extravaganza at Fuji Park. You’ll find a plethora of vendors, crafters, and artisans waiting to help make your holiday shopping hassle-free.

The Capital Community Band, under the direction of Richard Doede, will tie a big red bow around 2017 by presenting a Patriotic and Holiday concert on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017. The free concert will be presented in the Bob Boldrick Theatre in the Carson Community Center.

Sunday is usually synonymous with football this time of year. Raiders fans, and non-fans for that matter, are invited to the Eleventh Frame Lounge inside Carson Lanes to watch the game and join in the annual Adopt-a-Senior Fundraiser. With Thanksgiving just days away, the holiday season is just around the corner. The annual Holiday Craft Fair at Carson High features a plethora of handmade and locally crafted gifts for the loved ones on your shopping list. Take the plunge at the Carson Aquatic Center if you want to get a picture with Scuba Santa. Grab a coat, some friends, and your ID and head downtown for this month’s beer crawl. $15 gets you a glass and your first beer, from there you’ll pay only $1 for refills at several watering holes. Scoring early and often, Western Nevada FC was able to knock off the East Bay FC Stompers Juniors 4-0 in the first leg of the 2017 Northwest Conference Cup. East Bay is currently the Red Division leader in the Northwest Conference; WNFC plays in the Blue Division.

Wheatstone Bridge will brings its unique stylings of Americana, folk and Celtic to Carson City this Saturday, Nov. 11 with a performance at the Brewery Arts Center.

Brooklyn Maw, herself a Carson High School graduate, has returned to lead the One Up Club at CHS. Seeliger Elementary School is hosting theirs for the twenty-fifth year in a row. Take a trip on the V and T Steam Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum, actually take several trips. The annual Harvest Train event offers an all-day wristband that allows for as many rides as you’d like, in addition to museum admission. The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1976, presents Gerry O’Connor and Richard Mandel on Saturday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m. in the Maizie Harris Jesse Black Box Theater. This Saturday will begin the 4th season of the very popular Celtic Series and for the first time, you can purchase a season ticket to ensure that you don’t miss a show.

Artists from across the state, representing an array of mediums, are featured on the cover of this year’s Nevada Day program.
“The cover is a shared authorship of several artists, which plays into the ideals of the Nevada Day parade and its theme,” said Mark Salinas, Carson City’s director of arts and culture.

Sierra Lutheran High School Principal, Dr. Tami Seddon announced Thursday that senior Aleyna Gilson has been named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The Carson High School HOSA, Future Health Professionals had a Health Career Display Competition with 34 teams from 3 Health Science II classes. Each was judged on the display board’s information, artistic value and originality as well as a 5 minute oral presentation.

The Brewery Arts Center will continue an unforgettable season of free concerts under the stars in Carson City. You have one last chance to catch their fairytale, ‘Into the Woods, Jr.’ before it heads off to Neverland. The Brewery Arts Center plays host to a plethora of Jazz and Beyond today. Don't miss the final day of hot rods and chrome at the Silver Dollar Car Classic in Mills Park. Exercise your artistic talent and play with some mud at Ogres-Holm Pottery where they will be creating bowls for the upcoming Empty Bowls event.

Summer weekends make me wish I had a clone. With all the hustle and bustle in town, there is just no way to do and see it all. Start the day at the Silver Dollar Car Classic and you can get your fill of shiny chrome and breakfast, too; the Kiwanis will be serving up pancakes until 10:30 a.m. The Downtown Carson City Wine Walk has been infiltrated by the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival. Several of the stops will be hosting musicians, in addition to vino.
