What do you get when you combine 134 golfers, 70 runners, and 24 weight lifters on a beautiful Saturday in September? The results are over $9,000 raised toward pancreatic cancer funding and over $3,000 raised for local scholarships. Pretty amazing, right?

Hello from CHS in Carson City. I want to share this information with you so that you may be able to come and support our many students participating in Fall Sports. The list below has upcoming events for each sport in which our new Athletic Leadership Council is going to push out to their teams and friends to come support one another. In the spirit of unity, we want to reach out to both the staff and community to invite all of you to do the same.

Many types of people make up the fabric of Carson City and in my quest to learn why people are CarsonProud, I enjoy going to the many wonderful events that seem to be held every weekend. I recently attended the the 50th Anniversary of the Nevada Historical Society where time stood still for a moment or two as artists came together at the historical Foreman-Roberts House to showcase talents that have withstood the test of time.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking to several hundred Tahoe City residents on a warm summer evening in August. I was there for a celebration that has been a long time coming.

Residents gathered in the parking lot of the blighted Henrikson Building to take a ceremonial swing of the hammer — to say goodbye to an eyesore of a building whose useful life came to an end years ago. They were also there to celebrate what will soon take shape as Tahoe City’s first new hotel in more than 60 years.

CARSON CITY — Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to empowering educators to achieve excellence in learning, teaching and leading, is pleased to announce it has selected Rachel Croft, fourth grade teacher at Bordewich Bray Elementary School in the Carson City School District, as a 2019 Emerging Leader.

MINDEN — The Douglas County Community Services Foundation and Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort, through Vail Resorts EpicPromise have inked an agreement for a lifetime naming right sponsorship of the planned two-story world-class climbing wall in the Douglas County Community and Senior Center in Gardnerville.

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation on Thursday announced the appointment of two administrative positions for divisions in Carson City and Las Vegas.

Ms. Kimberly Gaa has been appointed as administrator for the agency’s Employment Security Division in Carson City and Dr. Marilyn Delmont has been appointed as administrator of the Information Development and Processing Division in Las Vegas.

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City brings a triple-shot of music, food and film as it combines its wheeled food Wednesday event with the Jazz and Beyond festival and an outdoor viewing of the Oscar-winning classic 1960 musical "West Side Story."

Having made it through the first day of school in Carson City, it is onward and upward as we head into Tuesday, August 20, 2019. Events around the area include fitness hikes and bike ride, a free floral design class at Silver City School House, art showings and Congressman Mark Amodei at Casino Fandango. Also featured is the launch of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the community center, a jazz quintet performance at Comma Courtyard and the 115th birthday celebration of Count Basie as part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival. CARSON CITY — Gov. Steve Sisolak has appointed Amanda Horn of Reno to a four-year term on the Nevada Arts Council Board. Horn is senior vice president of communications for the Nevada Museum of Art, a position she has held since 2013.

Set that alarm clock if the pituitary gland is not yet ready to do its job, because Monday arrives tomorrow and it is time yet again for students, parents, and even teachers to get out of bed early for the 2019-2020 school year.

Money begets money. And, that statement is true when it comes to the Carson City Parks & Recreation Foundation.

Recently, the Foundation was the recipient of a $20,000 matching grant from the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation to continue to refresh the Bob Boldrick Theater lobby within the community center that started in February allowing then Chamber Chairman of the Board Bob Fredlund to present the Foundation with a check for $20,300.

Virginia City’s popularity as a “must-see” destination has never waned, and with the local tourist agency's focus on bringing more events to the Comstock, visitor numbers are certainly expected to grow.

One thing the historic mining town wasn’t prepared for, however, was a strain on one very-important utility.

CARSON CITY — Business may be Greek to many college freshmen, but it’s the heart language of Avery Casteel. Casteel, a 2018 graduate from Sierra Lutheran High School and a rising sophomore at Concordia University, Irvine used her first year in college to quickly grab ahold of the fast-climbing elevator to the executive suite for college students studying business.

Continuing Education at Western Nevada College is offering a brand-new five-day coding boot camp program designed for middle and high school students from Monday, July 29 through Aug. 2. The course is offered in partnership with Alphalancers, LLC, a web design and development company based in Reno.

TOCCATA-Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus opens its concert series at the elegant Genoa Lakes Golf Club Ballroom at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31st with a special program.

With a windy cool down headed our way, activities around the Carson City area Wednesday, June 26 will make for a breezy good time. Heading into Father’s Day weekend, there's plenty of jam-packed activities around the Carson City region. There's Flag Day ceremonies at the Nevada Veterans Memorial and at the Elks Lodge. The Stewart Father’s Day Powwow happens Friday to Sunday and features hundreds of American Indian dancers, drummers artists and cultural enthusiasts. Lace up the tennis shoes for the Eastside Historical tour of the capital city hosted by Muscle Powered. Journey of Hope returns to Western Nevada College at 5 p.m. to settle into the evening. Open Mic Night at A to Zen will cap-off an eventful Friday heading into the weekend.
