Dayton brought into the spotlight as a finalist for Reader's Digest's 'Nicest Places in America' contest
Dayton resident Shelly Rosario nominated Dayton for the Reader's Digest "Nicest Places in America" contest, and is now one of 50 finalists.
According to Reader's Digest, the "Nicest Places in America" contest is meant to inspire hope through sharing stories of kindness through America.
"If your faith in humanity has been wavering, Nicest Places in America will restore it," they said. "America is full of places where neighbors are friends, strangers are welcome, and random acts of kindness are the norm. Each year, we find stories that prove that America is full of nice people trying to do right by each other. Our goal is to inspire everyone to be better friends, relatives and neighbors."
Rosario moved to Dayton following a divorce, and wanted to be closer to her father, who lived in Dayton. Together with her 12-year-old son, Rosario packed up their home in Simi Valley, Calif. and took off for Dayton.
Now, 14 years later, her daughter has joined Dayton as well and is expecting the family's first Nevada baby. Her son works as a firefighter for Lyon County. They intend to spend the rest of their lives in what Rosario considers, the nicest place in America.
"When you want to share how wonderful Nevada is, and it is not just Las Vegas," said Rosario. "We have wonderful friendly people here, from Carson City, to Gardnerville to small towns like Dayton, no matter you will always feel welcomed, that is how we do it here in Nevada! So when a contest came up for the Nicest Places in America came to me, I entered and now am the one of the finalist."
