Bishop Manouge Catholic High School will be opening their doors to prospective parents and students for an informative evening of academic program presentations, athletic and extracurricular overviews and campus tours. The goal is to give parents and students an authentic and in-person look at what it’s like to be a student at Bishop Manogue. From conversations with faculty members and current students, to displays of exceptional student work and campus tours, students and parents alike will get a real look at what it’s like to be a member of the Bishop Manogue community.

Carson High School opened its doors a little wider and a little longer Monday night with a back to school open house event that was extended to the entire Carson City community.

Come one, come all. Scheduled for Monday, Sept. 10 from 4:30 to 8 p.m., this once-a-year event takes the traditional back-to-school night to a whole new level as Carson High School opens its doors a little wider and a little longer.

Today's column features good news and bad news. The bad news is Labor Day is now behind us and we must re-adjust to a regular two-day weekend again. But therein lies the good news. Another weekend has arrived, and you'll find plenty of ways to enjoy your time off.

Newton Learning Center celebrates 10 years of providing educational programs tailored to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder with an open house Saturday, Sept. 8, from 4-7 p.m. at its campus located at 4895 Village Green Parkway in Reno.

The Carson High School senior class of 2019 arose early, not an easy task for a high school student, to celebrate the rising of the sun on this their final year of high school. A tradition that began decades ago at CHS has seniors jumping out of bed still wearing their pajamas, grabbing their blankets, and heading off to the CHS football field to arrive by 6 a.m.

Come to Tech Shield’s Open House during regular business hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2.

True or false…When you’re selling a house, you should bake cookies before a showing or an open house.

I guess you could say the answer is a hard and fast “true” because, after all, it can’t hurt. Who doesn’t like the smell of freshly baked cookies?

But it’s also kind of false…

It isn’t like you can Betty Crocker your way to a sale, let alone at the highest price possible. Your entire house still needs to be appealing. A batch of cookies isn’t going to hide bad odors enough or divert people’s attention from a messy house that needs repairs.

If only it were that simple…

A new, yet not so new, technology policy at CHS has upset some and caused others to look at the potential benefits.

No longer are students allowed to possess their earbuds at school let alone use them during breaks or at lunch time. Accessing cell-phones during class may also result in confiscation, delivery to the office, and a call home to have the parent or guardian come and personally pick it up from the office.

The last weekend of August holds tight to summertime tradition. Get something fresh from the field at Farmers Markets in Carson City, Genoa, and Dayton. Celebrate the end of summer with La Chamba on the Brewery Arts Center outdoor stage – one more season of Levitt Amp Community Concerts successfully behind us. Ever wondered about that small stone house on east side of Mills Park, opposite Carson High School? It's the Wungnema House, and it was built by a family of skilled Hopi stonemasons.

“Hopi in Carson City?” you might well ask. Absolutely! Visit the house on Sunday and learn something about these Hopi stonemasons, their heritage, and and their continuing legacy.

A warm and hearty “welcome back” reverberated across the lawns, playgrounds and halls Monday morning throughout Carson City as classes officially kicked off for the 2018-19 school year.

We are running out of summer weekends. I know that’s hard to believe right now, but hoodies and everything pumpkin is just beyond the horizon. Grab summer with both hands and go enjoy this beautiful city. The Brewery Arts Center brings Dennis Johnson and the Mississippi Ramblers to the stage for tonight’s free concert. Check out the Railroad Museum for your fill of music and antique motor cars. Carson City School District's back-to-school preparations are in full effect, with many events happening to help ease parents and children back into the swing of the daily routine of school.

It is finally Friday. As August melts away, it brings us closer to the new school year. Carson High returning students are invited to the Senator Kick-off this morning to get their fill of back-to-school updates. Families will love the Movie in the Park; bring a blanket or chairs and come prepared to enjoy ‘Coco.’ Three days of high-flying fun begins today at Heritage Park in Gardnerville as the Splash Dogs competition gets underway. You will always find live music around town on Fridays, but during the Jazz and Beyond Festival, it seems like music is everywhere.

Some Carson City history and stories about the Foreman and Roberts families who lived in this historic house are presented on a free, docent led tour. You will see a house museum and artifacts representing life in the 1880s through early 1900s. After touring the House, enjoy light refreshments and see the recently completed Carriage House and the informative new historical exhibits on display there.

Let’s get August off to a good start. The first Saturday of the month always plays host to the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, but with the Jazz and Beyond Musical Festival in full swing, you’ll have even more reasons to meander around downtown. The afternoon ice cream social at the historic Foreman-Roberts House is a perfect family-friendly treat before heading to the Brewery Arts Center for tonight’s free concert. Ready for a good time? The Carson City Fair runs all day and culminates with a special concert in the arena starring Journey Unlimited. Car lovers are in for a treat: you can head down to the Carson Mall for their monthly cruise night, or roll into the Max Casino to get registered for the 33rd annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The Trippin King Snakes take the stage in McFadden Plaza for a free all-ages show. Break a leg to the kids of Youth Theater Carson City; they open their production of ‘Bye, Bye, Birdie’ at the Community Center this evening.

What a day. The Concert Under the Stars brings Jefferson Starship to the outdoor stage at the Brewery Arts Show. Get there early to peruse the silent auction items and food vendors; the annual fundraising benefit for the Greenhouse Project is always the talk of the town. The Greatest Showman on Earth makes an appearance at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch: it’s Chautauqua night, and Doug Mishler will be portraying “Circus Showman P. T. Barnum.” The Stewart Indian School in east Carson City has history reaching into the early days of our state.

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Community Service Awards for year 2018 recipients in a brief ceremony on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park.

CARSON CITY — 2018 marks the 10-year anniversary for Pets of the Homeless, the only national nonprofit organization focused on feeding and providing care to pets of homeless people. In celebration of this milestone, Pets of the Homeless will host an open house July 27, from noon to 6 p.m. at its headquarters in Carson City, 400 West King Street.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Transportation will host public information meetings in July and August to provide updates on corridor selection for the future Interstate 11 connecting the Las Vegas valley and northwestern Nevada.
