Capital City Hoops, a local non-profit organization, is hosting the second annual Hoopaholics Basketball Camp for kids ages 5-15.

All boys and girls interested in basketball are encouraged to join the fun! Camp includes individual skill building, shooting competitions, team games, camp speakers, and camp prizes. A camp t-shirt is included with paid registration.

Heading into Father’s Day weekend, there's plenty of jam-packed activities around the Carson City region. There's Flag Day ceremonies at the Nevada Veterans Memorial and at the Elks Lodge. The Stewart Father’s Day Powwow happens Friday to Sunday and features hundreds of American Indian dancers, drummers artists and cultural enthusiasts. Lace up the tennis shoes for the Eastside Historical tour of the capital city hosted by Muscle Powered. Journey of Hope returns to Western Nevada College at 5 p.m. to settle into the evening. Open Mic Night at A to Zen will cap-off an eventful Friday heading into the weekend.

Carson City Chamber Honors 2019's The Best of The Best

Each June, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recognizes quality of life, community and economic growth achievements.

At the Chamber annual meeting on June 13, Chamber Chairman of the Board Robert Fredlund will honor seven individuals or businesses that personify what Mayor Robert Crowell is so often proud to state, “Carson City is a great place to live, work, and play.”

Carson City Fire Department called to brush fire in the Prison Hill area

UPDATE 2PM: The Prison Hill fire has been knocked down. Firefighters are now mopping up. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 1:23PM: Multiple fire crews are on scene working the Prison Hill Fire in southeast Carson City. From the command center it appears the smoke is not as heavy as it was earlier. No word yet on size or containment. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 1PM: A U.S. Forest Service brush unit has also been requested and a helicopter from Minden has also arrived. No word yet as to containment or if any structures are threatened.

UPDATE 12:39PM: At least five brush units from Carson City have been called as well as a brush unit from East Fork Fire Protection District, a brush unit from Central Lyon County Fire and a helicopter. The fire continues to put up a dense amount of smoke.

Carson City Fire Department was called early Sunday afternoon to a brush fire in the Prison Hill area in southeast Carson City.

Boomers’ Sad Overall Legacy to Children (Opinion)

This is my final column on the sad legacy we Boomers are leaving our children.

The first one defined the public interest as mainly maximizing economic growth. That piece and the next showed that the economic policies, practices and institutions that maximize growth also promote fairness among individuals. They also debunked obsessions with income inequality. The third part focused on the 21st Century revival of progressivism and statist liberalism, plus the addition of political correctness (PC).

Here I offer directions for some solutions.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. CCAI will host an opening reception on Friday, June 7, 5 to 7 p.m. The artists will give a brief talk about their work at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition will be in the gallery from June 7 to Sept. 26, 2019.

JoAnne Skelly: Sapsucker damage to an old birch tree

Our big birch has finally given up after decades of bronze birch borer and sapsucker damage. Rows of regular horizontal holes about a quarter-inch in diameter cover the trunk from bottom to top. These are caused by sapsucker woodpeckers drilling for sap in the tree. Initally, borer damage reduced the flow of water and food within the tree, causing limbs to die each year. The sapsucker feeding finally finished the tree off.

Earlier this month, the State Bar of Nevada announced the recipients of the 2019 Membership Awards. Among those selected was local Carson City attorney, Amber J. Handy.

Attorney Amber Handy received the 2019 Young Lawyer of the Year Award, which recognizes the professional and public service achievements of Nevada attorneys either under the age of 36 or those engaged in the practice of law for fewer than five years.

Annual Special Olympics Nevada Summer Games held this weekend in Reno

More than 300 Special Olympics athletes from across the state will converge this weekend in Reno for the annual Special Olympics Nevada (SONV) Summer Games. The torch was carried through Carson City Friday on its way to the games.

Dayton Valley and Lake Tahoe students compete in Scripps National Spelling Bee

There are two from the Northern Nevada area who competed in this week's Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland.

Morgan Salvador, a 12-year-old 7th grader who attends George Whittell High School in Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe was Speller No. 284, while Morgan Bumgardner, Speller 275, is a 13-year-old Dayton Intermediate School student. He is listed as being from Mound House. Both students were, unfortunately, eliminated as they worked their way into the finals.
