Drift smoke from Pollock Pines wildfire seen west of Carson City

UPDATE: Drift smoke from a large and growing wildfire in northern California was seen Sunday west of Carson City in the Hobart, Lakeview and Marlette areas. Carson City firefighters have checked the areas after several 911 calls were made to dispatch.

Weather Service: Hazy skies from fires in Northern California, Oregon

The National Weather Service in Reno reports on its Facebook page Sunday that hazy conditions have developed throughout the region, from Dayton, Fallon and Pyramid Lake. Carson City is experiencing blue skies.

"After looking at visible satellite and making some phone calls, we believe that it is smoke from fires in Northern California and Oregon. Sierra Front is not reporting any incidents in Nevada at this time," according to the weather service Facebook page.

Youth football event at Carson High causes parking jam

Thousands are gathering today at Carson High School for the Sierra Youth Football League Carson Experience. More than 15,000 parents, coaches, players and fans are expected to attend the event, which has brought players to scrimmage from Northern Nevada and Northern California.

Parking has swelled, filling lots at the high school, nearby churches, side streets and at Mills Park. Parking is now being encouraged at Gold Dust West, according to Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputies via dispatch. There is a shuttle bus that is operating, transporting passengers to the event from the resort casino, located at 2171 Highway 50 East.

California foothills fire could bring smoke to area

A wildfire in Northern California has destroyed five homes and several other structures near vineyards in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the Sand Fire has burned about 1,300 acres near the border of Amador and El Dorado counties. It was about 20 percent contained Saturday morning.

Tasters go for the bold and zesty during first day of Carson City chili cook-off

Lots of shady trees, a nice gentle breeze and plenty of ice cold beer were enough to keep the heat down a notch Saturday at the High Sierra Regional Chili Cook-Off and Craft Fair in Carson City.

The two-day event at Glen Eagles Restaurant, which continues through Sunday, has brought dozens of the best chili cookers from around the region hoping for a chance to win prize money, bragging rights and a trip to Las Vegas for the World Chili Cook-off Championship. The public is invited to Sunday's event and sampling costs next to nothing, organizers said.
