Carson High School graduation: Where to Park

For folks going into Carson High School’s 10 a.m. graduation ceremony today, car pooling is encouraged. Parking will be in the main parking area of the school, the tech center parking lot, the north parking lots and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints parking lot at 411 Saliman Road.

Parking is also available at Mills Park by going through Seely Loop at Saliman Road. Handicapped parking will be available toward the front entrances of the high school.

It’s a Railroad kind of weekend in Carson City. The historic 1885 Glenbrook Steam Engine will be on display Saturday, all steamed up with the Inyo at the Nevada Railroad Museum. You will want to arrive before the dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. to get the best photos. The V and T Steam Engine #25 will be running all weekend if you want to take a ride. Carson City man facing felony charge in 2013 fatal pedestrian crash released on bail

A 29-year-old Carson City man who had been released from prison in Lovelock was booked into Carson City Jail Tuesday on a felony warrant in connection to an early morning February 2013 pedestrian hit and run crash on William Street in which a Carson City contractor died.

John Raymond Gelien was then released Tuesday on $50,000 bail, according to a Carson City jail deputy.

His arrest stems from an incident that happened at around 6:30 a.m. Feb.

The LXS Gallery in the Legislature is welcoming new artwork from Su Limbert entitled ‘Forevermore.’ The Nevada Artists Association was busy this weekend changing their gallery at the Brewery Arts Center; their landscape show opens today. Nolan Preese has an exhibit featuring photographs exploring Nevada’s watersheds on display at the Courthouse on the second floor.

Things to do around Carson City for Sunday, May 17

It’s a good weekend for the arts. Consort Canzona presents a free concert on Sunday: “Madrigals and Dances: A Celebration of Renaissance Music.” The ‘Music Man’ wraps up its successful run at the Community Center. The Capital City Community Band performs old favorites at Western Nevada College. And you won’t want to miss the Zephyrus Brass Quintet on the Dangberg Ranch lawn.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is hosting their annual Cops and Kids Open House, so head to the courthouse for some fun.

Western Nevada College to Graduate More than 500 at ceremony Monday in Carson City

Western Nevada College has announced that it will graduate 515 students for the 2014-15 academic year. The 2015 commencement ceremony will take place on Monday, May 18, 11 a.m. at the Marv Teixieira Pavilion in Mills Park, in Carson City.

The class of 2015 will receive 568 degrees and certificates.

Carson City Sheriff's Office Cops and Kids open house Saturday celebrates 12th year

The 12th annual Carson City Sheriff's Office "Cops and Kids" Open House, billed as the "Safest Street Party in Carson City," will be this Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the sheriff's office, 911 East Musser Street.

The free community event features, activities, ID kits for children, food, music, games and more. On hand will be the sheriff's office K9 dogs, motorcycle patrol unit, Special Enforcement Team, stellar squad, a new SWAT unit, representatives from DARE, and the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Poetry, art, and theater today in Carson City. All day long, the CCAI exhibit, Tuscarora, will be visible in the Sierra Room as the Board of Supervisors conduct their meeting. Head over to the Legislature for ‘RenoScapes,’ the final SENarts ‘Works of Artists’ program this season; check out the LXS Exhibit by artist Dawn Dot Star while you are there, it will be changing next week. Teens are invited to learn some acting and improv skills at the Carson City Library this afternoon. Nevada Arts Council Fellowship winners, Laura Wetherington and Jared Stanley, will be sharing their poetry and honored at a reception today at Western Nevada College.

RSVP Spring Fun Fair returns to Mills Park this weekend

For the 30th year, the Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc. (RSVP) will sponsor the Spring Fun Fair and Carnival at Mills Park this Thursday, May 7 through Sunday, May 10.

The carnival opens at 5 pm on Thursday and Friday, at 2 pm on Saturday and Noon on Sunday. All proceeds go toward services for Carson City seniors designed to assist them to remain independent and in their own homes with dignity.

Have you picked your pony yet? The Kentucky Derby is today, but that is far from the only thing running today. Chili on the Comstock is hosting their inaugural Fun with the Runs 5K Saturday at 10 a.m. The 1926 Edwards Motor Car is running, too, and ready for rides at the Nevada Railroad Museum.     Carson City arrest log: Man jailed after allegedly exposing himself to teen at Mills Park

    A 30-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in the area of Mills Park after allegedly exposing himself to a 16-year-old girl, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. Kyle William Chase, a Red Oak, Iowa resident, was booked into Carson City Jail on $5,000 bail.

    According to the arrest report, a deputy was dispatched to the park at 3:32 p.m. and met with the 16-year-old victim who stated her mother drove her to the park to check on a younger sister near the skate area. She said she observed the suspect, William, on his back, on the ground and appeared to be sunning himself and wearing shorts.

The Carson Area Chapter 388 Vietnam Veterans of America is hosting the Vietnam Veterans Day “Welcome Home” celebration all day today at Mills Park. All veterans and the community are invited to come out to the park, view some of the exhibits, war-era vehicles, helicopters and equipment used during the war. Festivities and fellowship continue through 5:30 p.m.

    The sun is shining, the flowers blooming, the birds chirping, the wind gusting, and Carson City is hopping! Easter fun can be found this weekend at the annual EGGstravaganza at Carson Tahoe Medical Center, the Children’s Museum, the Carson Mall, and the Brewery Arts Center.

    Head over to Mills Park for the Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration, complete with military vehicles, exhibits, and more. For demonstrations from soldiers with an even older history, the Nevada Civil War Volunteers will be in Dayton Saturday.

    It’s Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature today, complete with a display of the various services available to our Veterans set up in the front foyer. On this day in 1982, a ground-breaking ceremony was held in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Carson City has a Vietnam Veterans Memorial of its own located in Mills Park. The memorial will be the site of a Welcome Home Celebration this Saturday for Vietnam Veterans Day.

    The Carson Area Chapter 388 Vietnam Veterans of America will host the Vietnam Veterans Day “Welcome Home” ceremony on Saturday, March 28, at the Nevada Vietnam Memorial located at Mills Park.

    All Vietnam veterans and the public are invited to attend the ceremony, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. that will honor those who served and came home and remembering Brothers and Sisters who served but never made it home.
