Carson City auto mechanics celebrate Labor Day weekend with marathon truck rebuild
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 09/01/2014 - 10:41amA retired mechanic from Carson City and some of his friends have pulled out all the stops this Labor Day weekend for a ‘round the clock truck building project that may rival anything done on TV reality shows.
John Jackson’s plan: Refurbish a 1969 Peterbilt 358 into an old school hotrod using parts from six similar rigs. A feat like this would take months if it were a weekend garage hobby and probably cost tens of thousand of dollars.
Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Sept. 7

Crews will be striping roadways throughout the city weekdays between the hours of 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Minor delays are expected on roadways that are being striped while the work occurs.
Fireworks tonight in South Lake Tahoe

The show features a simultaneous music broadcast that can be heard on local stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL - AM 1490. Show begins at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks are visible from all over town.

We had an exciting week at CHS including a video message from our rivals from Douglas High School. Their staff challenged our staff to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. More than 50 CHS teachers and staff showed up for the challenge, as we could never let the Tigers out-do us.
Carson City area Labor Day weekend forecast: Breezy conditions, highs in the mid 80s

Low humidity and gusty winds has prompted a Red Flag Warning through at least Saturday for Carson City, the western Nevada Sierra front and central Nevada basin, according to the National Weather Service.
Steam locomotive runs Labor Day weekend at State Railroad Museum

The 1905 Steam Locomotive No. 25 highlights the Labor Day weekend celebration at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. The historic Virginia and Truckee train will carry passengers on 30-minute trips departing every 45 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday through Monday, Aug. 30 through Sept. 1.
The museum’s Jacobsen Interpretive Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Last week Renee and I spent a few days in Alpine County. We set up base camp at the Carson River Resort. The resort is centralized in the area we enjoy fishing the most. We started on the East Carson River and worked our way up to Wolf Creek and Silver Creek. The water flows have slowed down but are still very fishable.

Labor Day rally calls attention to maternal health care and birthing practices

Thousands of families and healthcare providers in all 50 states will rally to call attention to what advocates say is a crisis in American maternal health care.
Though the U.S. has the highest maternity care costs in the world, it ranks 45th in maternal safety, according to data from the United Nations, which lists the United States maternal death rate as tied with that of Iran and Hungary.

There will be single lane closures on weeknights from 1 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. in the westbound direction and from 7 p.m. to 11 a.m. in the eastbound direction.
On Monday, August 25, Telegraph Street will be closed to through traffic between Division Street and Minnesota Street from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Be advised that no matter where you go, unless it is to some God-forsaken location in the middle of nowhere, you can expect to encounter big crowds of people also wanting to enjoy an outdoor outing for the holiday.
So, be prepared for lots of company wherever you go or whatever you do.
