Labor Day rally calls attention to maternal health care and birthing practices
A rally to call attention to maternal health care issues will be held Sept. 1, Labor Day at the Nevada State Legislative Building in Carson City. Thousands of families and healthcare providers in all 50 states will rally to call attention to what advocates say is a crisis in American maternal health care.
Though the U.S. has the highest maternity care costs in the world, it ranks 45th in maternal safety, according to data from the United Nations, which lists the United States maternal death rate as tied with that of Iran and Hungary.
The third annual Rally to Improve Birth is designed to call attention to what organizers say is an abysmal state of the country's maternal health care system. Organized through ImprovingBirth.org, the national campaign calls for evidence-based, humane birth practices.
Organizers point to the all-time high Cesarean section rate of 1 in 3 births as an indicator of a system where the care we receive is shaped by many factors other than what is best for moms and babies-- where 9 out of 10 women receive care that increases, rather than decreases, the risks of harm to them and their babies (see www.ImprovingBirth.org/the-evidence-shows).
The rally is open to mothers, fathers, children, healthcare providers, birth professionals, and anyone else who supports better, safer, more respectful maternity care.
The Carson City rally begins at 11 a.m. Learn more about the local rally at the Facebook page here.
