Well we made it to spring again! I love spring! Another year into the history books. I looked at myself in the mirror recently and wondered who was the “old guy” staring back.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Rural Housing Authority staff, along with its Board of Commissioners, are mourning the death of Commission member, Tom Cook. Cook died at Carson Tahoe Hospital, while surrounded by loving family, on April 25, 2013.

The Friends of the Carson City Library will welcome comedienne Paula Poundstone in concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater in Carson City on Friday, March 29.

Doors open at 7 p.m. with the performance at 7:30 p.m. at the Theater, located in the Carson City Community Center. Reserved seats are $45 and general admission $35. Donny Edwards, known worldwide as one of the most authentic Elvis impressionists to take the stage, performed for 2.5 hours in front of Carson City Elvis fans. Active duty and military veterans were admitted to the show free as part of an extended Veteran's Day tribute by the Carson Nugget.

This workshop is designed to give caregivers, family members and loved ones the skills and knowledge needed to cope with the situation, and even find some humor in it. CHARRISON DAVID ASHTON, known to many family and friends as Davey, was born March 10, 1939, to James David Ashton and Nellie Margaret “Margie” Charrison in Pasadena, California. The Ashton’s moved to Kings Beach, California in 1944. After graduating from Tahoe Truckee High School in 1957 he enlisted in the United States Navy serving one term touring the Pacific.

CARSON CITY – Bill Raggio, a lion of Nevada politics and the state’s longest-serving state senator, passed away during a trip to Australia on Thursday. He was 85.

Officials from around the state expressed sorrow and sympathy for Raggio’s family when news of the loss of the highly-regarded lawmaker was first reported by Las Vegas Sun columnist Jon Ralston early today.

Longtime family friend Greg Ferraro told Ralston: “Officially, Bill Raggio passed away last night at 10pm PST of respiratory illness in Sydney Australia. Funeral arrangements are pending.”

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency employee Jeff Cowen was honored as the recipient of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber and Resort Association’s Employee of the Year Award for his outstanding work as TRPA’s Community Liaison.

“I was shocked and truly honored to receive this recognition,” Cowen said about the award. “I am lucky in my job because I get to inform the community about all the great work being done by TRPA staff. I know I share this award with them,” he said.

"Colombiana," a thriller currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City and other local theaters, is a revenge film starring the big blue woman of "Avatar," Zoe Saldana, as Cataleva Restrepo. The excellent Amandia Sternberg plays Restrepo as a young girl --- and if there is anyone going to star in future movies it's this young lady. She's solemn, unfazed and a real actress.

RENO — University of Nevada, Reno President Milton D. Glick died April 16, 2011. His sudden death in a Reno-area hospital following a stroke marks an incredible loss for his family, the University community and his many friends across the state of Nevada and the nation.

“Milt was a strong, extraordinarily respected leader and that, combined with his enduring belief in the power of higher education, set the stage for a remarkable legacy,” wrote University Provost Marc Johnson in an announcement to campus on Sunday morning.

The romantic comedy "Just Go With It," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is the latest Hollywood genre poke that, though has its moments, chiefly those involving Jennifer Aniston, it is marred by stupid toilet jokes aimed at making kids laugh and a couple of easily disliked young actors.

I was prepared to write off "The Green Hornet" as just another superhero movie, aimed at comic-book readings kids. Well, I was partly wrong. The film now playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City is aimed at the lower levels of intelligence, but along the way offers some humor and an incredible chase-crash-shootout scene. So all is not lost when sitting in the Galaxy stadium seats.

The family-aimed film "Gulliver's Travels," now playing at the Fandango's Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, has very little to do with the book (or books) Johnathan Swift wrote in satire on the English government in the 18th century. Gone is the wit, the clever writing, the book that many of us read in high school or English Lit 103.
