Carson City leaders look at appraiser for possible land swap with family trust

A Carson City family trust wishes to trade the historic Pioneer Cemetery and a 19-acre hill site south and west of Ormsby Boulevard and Kings Canyon Road. The Potter Family Trust would receive the equivalent in city land if such a land trade were to happen.
As part of the process, Carson City leaders will decide when they meet Thursday whether to appoint Stephen R. Johnson and Associates as the indendent appraiser for the potential exchange.

Trains, burgers and the Civil War this Labor Day weekend

South Lake Tahoe appoints Nancy Kerry as permanent City Manager

At the conclusion of Tuesday’s South Lake Tahoe City Council closed session, the council unanimously voted and offered the full time permanent City Manager position to Nancy Kerry. The terms of the two-and-a-half year contract are still being negotiated.

The Polar Express train returns to Carson City, tickets on sale now

Carson City is getting a big present this upcoming holiday season with the return of The Polar Express™ train that will roll through the frosty Northern Nevada landscape on 15 different dates throughout November and December.

For the second year, the Virginia & Truckee Railroad is one of the officially licensed Polar Express Train Ride events nationwide this holiday season. UNR archeologist leads Virginia City hospital excavation team

The University of Nevada, Reno, in cooperation with the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office, has sent a team of archaeologists to excavate the site of one of Nevada’s most important early hospitals. St. Mary Louise Hospital in Virginia City opened in 1876 and served the mining community until the early 20th century.

North Lake Tahoe to Host Full Distance Ironman in 2013

North Lake Tahoe announced today that it will host the first full-distance Ironman event in California since 2001. The competition is scheduled to take place September 22, 2013.

River rafting begins along the Truckee River at Lake Tahoe

The dam gates are open and the river is flowing, and rafting along North Lake Tahoe’s scenic Truckee River is now open.

Tahoe City-based Truckee River Rafting opened Tuesday, June 12. Truckee River Raft Company, also in Tahoe City, opens today, Thursday, June 14. The companies offer self-guided, five-mile floats down the Truckee River.

Lake Tahoe prepares itself for multiple fireworks celebrations

The Lake Tahoe region will celebrates Independence Day holiday with multiple fireworks displays from virtually all points, with the first show set to kick off July 3.

“North Lake Tahoe is unique in that we have a series of fireworks events held throughout the region,” said Chief Marketing Officer Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association. “Visitors to the area can take their pick in terms of when and where or enjoy more than one show during their stay.”

History will come to life at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City during the five-day celebration of Independence Day. Visitors can ride a train pulled by steam locomotive No. 25 Saturday, June 30 through Tuesday, July 3, and photograph significant cars on special outdoor display including the fully restored McKeen motor car. On the Fourth of July, the rare McKeen motor car will operate on the rails offering passengers rides all day.
